　　Arthur Waley (1889—1966), a distinguished British Sinologist, was an outstanding translator of Chinese culture and literature to the English-reading public. Self-taught in Chinese and Japanese, he reached admirable levels in both languages and translated many volumes of the Chinese classics, including The Book of Songs (《詩經(jīng)》, 1937) , The Monkey (《西游記》, 1942) and The Analects of Confucius (《論語》, 1938). He also wrote critical criticisms on classical Chinese poetry and painting.

　　《蒹葭》出自中國最古老的詩歌總集——《詩經(jīng)》中的《國風(fēng)·秦風(fēng)》,被譽(yù)為“詩三百”中最優(yōu)美的詩篇之一。盡管對(duì)于詩歌本身內(nèi)容的考究,歷來意見很多,甚至有人認(rèn)為它是政治詩,但現(xiàn)代人對(duì)于它的內(nèi)涵和美感的理解卻似乎尤為愿意視其為一曲情歌,美麗而哀愁。
　　談及《詩經(jīng)》,需要很大的決心,而品讀《蒹葭》就更需要莫大的勇氣。因?yàn)樵诮裉?《蒹葭》可以說是《詩經(jīng)》里普及率和受歡迎程度最高的詩歌。它的情思、它的境界從來就是眾人稱道的經(jīng)典。論境界,有人指“‘詩三百’中,無句可出其右” ;論情懷,更有人說過“古之寫相思,未有過之《蒹葭》者”。
