this, that, these, those

　　指示代詞this, that, these, those在時間和空間上對所指人或事物有遠(yuǎn)近之分，this和these常用來指時間和空間上較近的人或事物，而that和those則常用來指時間和空間上較遠(yuǎn)的人或事物。如：

　　I want this book, not that book. 我要這本書，不是那本書。

　　2. 單復(fù)數(shù)的區(qū)別

　　指示代詞this, that, these, those在意義上單數(shù)和復(fù)數(shù)之分，this和that用來表示單數(shù)概念，there或those則用來表示復(fù)數(shù)概念。如：

　　I like these and he likes those. 我喜歡這些，他喜歡那些。

　　3. 指人與指物

　　指示代詞this, that, these, those用作主語和定語時，可以指人也可以指物;但用作賓語和表語時，則只能指物，不能指人。如：

　　This is my friend, and this is my friend’s room.

　　句中的兩個this均用作主語，前面一個指人，后面一個指物。句意為：這是我的朋友，這是我的朋友的房間。

　　Do you know this?

　　此句中的this用作賓語，只能指物，不能指人，所以這句只能理解為“你知道這個情況嗎?”不能理解為“你認(rèn)識這個人嗎?”

　　4. this與that

　　用來回指上文提到的事情時，可用this 或 that，但是若要指下文敘述的事情，通常要用 this。如：

　　She married Jim, and this [that] surprised me. 她嫁給了吉姆，這使我感到很吃驚。

　　I want to know this: Is he healthy? 我想知道這一點：他是否很健康。

　　另外，在打電話時，通常用 this 指自己，用that指對方。如：

　　Hello. This is Jim. Is that John? 喂，我是吉姆，你是約翰嗎?

　　但是，在美國英語中指對方時也可用 this。

　　5. 表替代

　　為了避免重復(fù)，我們可用that和those來代替前面提到的名詞。如：

　　The only sound was that of a car. 唯一的聲音為汽車聲。

　　The weather of Beijing is colder than that of Guangzhou. 北京的天氣比廣州冷。

　　His ideas are different from those of his friends. 他的想法和他朋友的想法不同。

　　第一句中的that of a car相當(dāng)于the sound of a car，第二句中的that of Guangzhou相當(dāng)于the weather of Guangzhou，第三句中的those of his friends相當(dāng)于the ideas of his friends。

　　6. 用作副詞

　　this和that除用作代詞外，有時還可以用作副詞，與形容詞或副詞連用，表示到這種(那種)的程度，其意為“這么”“那么”，大致與副詞so同義。如：

　　I wasn’t that clever. 我沒有那么聰明(www.yygrammar.com)。

　　I didn’t know it was getting this late. 我沒料到已經(jīng)這么晚了。
