　　1. another或“another+單數(shù)可數(shù)名詞”泛指“另一，再(加)一個(gè)，類似的”;其復(fù)數(shù)形式是others或“other+復(fù)數(shù)名詞”泛指“別人或別的事物”。另外，還有some…others…(有些……有些……)之搭配。如：

　　I don’t like this one, please show me another. 我不喜歡這個(gè),請(qǐng)給我另一個(gè)。

　　He drank another glass of beer. 他又喝了一杯啤酒。

　　He is ready to help others.他樂(lè)于幫助別人(from www.yygrammar)。

　　She enjoys spending other people’s money. 他喜歡花別人的錢。

　　Some boys are reading; others are listening to the radio. 有些孩子在閱讀,有些則在聽(tīng)收音機(jī)。

　　2. the other或“the other +單數(shù)可數(shù)名詞”特指兩者中的另一個(gè)，常有one…the other…(一個(gè)……另一個(gè)……)的搭配;其復(fù)數(shù)形式the others或“the other +復(fù)數(shù)名詞”特指在某些人或物中，除去一部分后，“其余的”人或物。如：

　　Hold it in this hand, not the other. 用這只手握著, 不要用那只手。

　　He has two pens. One is a red; the other is black. 他有兩支鋼筆，一支是紅的，另一支是黑的。

　　Mary’s here. Where are all the others? 瑪麗在這里，其余的所有人都到哪里去了?

　　3. another用于“another+基數(shù)詞(包括few)+復(fù)數(shù)名詞”中，與“基數(shù)(包括some)+other+復(fù)數(shù)名詞”相當(dāng)。如：

　　He’ll stay here for another two days (=two other days). 他要在這里再呆兩天。

　　4. else只能放在復(fù)合不定代詞或者疑問(wèn)詞后，其所有格形式是else’s。如：

　　Is there anything else you want? 你還要些別的什么嗎?

　　Who else is there in the house? 屋子里還有誰(shuí)?

　　5. the rest 既可代替可數(shù)名詞，也可代替不可數(shù)名詞。而 another, others, the other(s) 只能代替可數(shù)名詞。如：

　　The rest of the milk has gone bad. 其余的牛奶都變質(zhì)了。

　　John’s Scottish and the rest of us are Welsh. 約翰是蘇格蘭人，我們其余的是威爾士人。
