戰(zhàn)爭與和平

Is war inevitable? Can war be prevented?

戰(zhàn)爭是一種必然嗎?戰(zhàn)爭可以避免嗎?

History tells us that there were wars,great or small,

歷史告訴我們，有大大小小的戰(zhàn)爭

in every century, in every decade.

發(fā)生在在每個世紀(jì)，每一個十年。

Throughout the ages, from the Stone Age to theAtomic Age,

從古至今，由石器時代到原子時代，

men have been fighting,first with swords and shields,

人們都在相斗，最初用劍和盾，

then with guns and cannons,

然后是槍炮，

and now,hydrogen bombs and missiles are used for military purposes.

現(xiàn)在是將氫彈和導(dǎo)彈用于軍事目的了。

But,in spite of all these, it is still my belief that war can be prevented

雖然這樣，我還是堅信戰(zhàn)爭可以避免，

and peace can be won but it requires the effort of each and every one of us,

和平可以得到。不過需要我們?nèi)巳说呐Γ?/p>

and everyone in the world.

每一個世人的努力。

I am sure that we would not like to experience another world war.

我確信我們都不愿再經(jīng)受另一次世界大戰(zhàn)。

If it ever happens, two-thirds of the world

如果發(fā)生的話，世界的三分之二，

and much of the civilization which men have gained through time,

和許多由世代人們得到的文化，

patience and effort will be destroyed.

經(jīng)過忍耐和努力而得到的，都將遭到毀滅。

Will the remaining one-third of the world be able to survive on its own?

那時，留下的三分之一的世界能夠獨(dú)自生存下去嗎?

Our task now is not to blame the past, but to plan for the future.

我們現(xiàn)在的任務(wù)不是譴責(zé)過去，而是要計劃將來。

If there is peace in the world,

如果世上有和平，

men can use their rockets to explore the mystery of space,

人類可以用他們的火箭探測太空的神秘，

their submarines to explore the depth of the sea,

用他們的潛水艇測量海洋的深度，

their missiles to deliver mail

用他們的導(dǎo)彈來寄郵件

and their fine equipment to penetrate the jungles of Africa,

用他們的良好設(shè)備深入非洲的叢林，

instead of using them militarily.

從而代替這些武器在軍事上的使用。

Governments can use their money to build more schools,

政府可以用他們的錢建造更多的學(xué)校，

so that more children can be educated to be useful citizens.

使更多的兒童受到教育，成為有用的公民。

Scientists can use atomic energy to propel steamers and planes.

科學(xué)家可以用原子能發(fā)動輪船和飛機(jī)，

They can also devise new machines to increase the production of goods

同時可發(fā)明新機(jī)器，增加物品的生產(chǎn)，

and thus improve the way people live their lives.

從而改變?nèi)藗兊纳睢?/p>

How can a peaceful world be achieved? It requires,in my opinion,

怎樣才可能實(shí)現(xiàn)一個和平的世界呢?我認(rèn)為，

the understanding and friendship of all the peoples from all nations.

這需要各國人民之間的了解和友誼。

Let no one suffer discrimination by reason of colour, race,

沒有人會受到歧視因?yàn)槟w色，種族

religion or national origin.

宗教和國籍。

Let the rich support the poor and the strong help the weak.

讓富有的幫助貧窮的，強(qiáng)的扶助弱的。

We know that neither peace nor such a dream world

我們知道，不論和平還是這樣的理想世界，

can come true in a day or a month.

都不可能在一天，一個月內(nèi)實(shí)現(xiàn)，

It may even take decades or centuries But let us plan and begin now.

那需要幾十年甚至幾百年。讓我們現(xiàn)在就作出計劃并付諸行動吧!
