大學(xué)城

When we say that Cambridge is a university town

當(dāng)我們談到劍橋是座大學(xué)城時(shí)，

we do not mean that it is a town with university in it.

這并不是說劍橋是座擁有大學(xué)的城市。

A university town is one where there is no clearseparation

大學(xué)城是指沒有一個(gè)明顯的隔離帶

between the university buildings and the rest of thecity.

在大學(xué)的建筑物與其他城市部分之間。

The university is not just one part of the town;it is all over the town.

大學(xué)不只是城市的一個(gè)組成部分，而是遍及城市的各個(gè)角落。

The heart of Cambridge has its shops, restaurants, marketplace and so on,

劍橋市中心有商店，飯店，超市等，

but most of it is university—college,libraries,

但是大學(xué)占據(jù)了城市的大部分地區(qū)——學(xué)院，圖書館，

clubs and other places for university staff and students.

俱樂部,以及供大學(xué)師生生活學(xué)習(xí)的地方。

The town was there first.

劍橋起初是座城市。

Cambridge became a center of learning in the thirteenth century.

后來在13世紀(jì)成為學(xué)習(xí)中心。

Many students were too poor to afford lodging.

當(dāng)時(shí)學(xué)生都很貧窮，付不起住宿費(fèi)。

Colleges were opened so that students could live cheaply.

于是便創(chuàng)辦了學(xué)院，這樣可為學(xué)生提供便宜的住宿。

This was the beginning of the present-day college system.

這就是如今學(xué)院體制的開始。

Today there are nearly thirty colleges.

現(xiàn)在,劍橋大學(xué)內(nèi)大約有30個(gè)學(xué)院。

Very few students can now live in college

只有少數(shù)學(xué)生能住在學(xué)院內(nèi)

for the whole of their four years; the numbers are too great.

在完成整個(gè)學(xué)業(yè)的過程中。

Many of them live in lodgings at first

許多學(xué)生最初住在校外

and move into college for their final year.

直到學(xué)業(yè)的最后一年才會(huì)搬到學(xué)院內(nèi)。

But every student is a member of his college from the beginning.

每個(gè)學(xué)生從一開始就是這個(gè)學(xué)院的一個(gè)成員，

He must eat a number of meals in the college hall each week.

每周都必須在學(xué)生食堂內(nèi)吃上好幾頓餐飯。

Students are not allowed to keep cars in Cambridge,

在劍橋?qū)W生不允許有汽車，

so nearly all ride bicycles.

因此幾乎所有的學(xué)生都使用自行車。

Don't try to drive through Cambridge during the five minutes between lectures,

千萬(wàn)不要駕車駛過劍橋這座城市在課間五分鐘里。

as you will find crowds of people on bicycles hurrying in all directions.

因?yàn)槟銜?huì)看到去自行車的人流朝著不同的方向急速地穿行。

If you are in Cambridge at five minutes to the hour any morning of the term,

如果你每天早晨課前五分鐘在劍橋行使的話，

you'll know that you are in a university town.

你就會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)你是在一所大學(xué)城內(nèi)穿行，

Stop in some safe place and wait.

等一會(huì)兒再走。
