But there are instances where, after the lapse of many hours or several days, the sunken whale again rises, more buoyant than in life. But the reason of this is obvious. Gases are generated in him; he swells to a prodigious magnitude; becomes a sort of animal balloon. A line-of-battle ship could hardly keep him under then. In the Shore Whaling, on soundings, among the Bays of New Zealand, when a Right Whale gives token of sinking, they fasten buoys to him, with plenty of rope; so that when the body has gone down, they know where to look for it when it shall have ascended again.

但是，也有許多場合，在經(jīng)過許多鐘頭或者好幾天后，那條沉下去的鯨又會再浮上來，比它活著的時候更有浮力。不過為什么會這樣，道理卻很明白，因為它滿身是氣，脹得那么碩大無比，已經(jīng)成了一只大氣球。碰到這種場合，就是一只大戰(zhàn)艦也壓它不下去。在古代的捕鯨業(yè)中，每當在新西蘭海灣一帶搜索的時候，如果碰到一條有下沉跡象的露脊鯨，他們就用許多繩索把它拴在浮筒上，這樣，等到那尸身沉下去的時候，他們就可以在它再浮起來的時候，在那個地方找到它了。
