The straight warp of necessity, not to be swerved from its ultimate course-- its every alternating vibration, indeed, only tending to that; free will still free to ply her shuttle between given threads; and chance, though restrained in its play within the right lines of necessity, and sideways in its motions directed by free will, though thus presCRIbed to by both, chance by turns rules either, and has the last featuring blow atevents.

定數(shù)的筆直的經(jīng)線，絕不能越出它根本的常軌——不錯，它每回的往復(fù)擺動，只能循著常軌走；自由意志卻還有在特定的線間投梭的自由；至于機會，雖則它的活動范圍局限在那根定數(shù)的直線里，而且它打斜的動作受了自由意志的指揮，盡管機會是這樣受到這兩種東西的指揮，可是，它卻能夠反過來控制這兩種東西，而且，無論如何，最后能夠一舉而顯出特點來。

To be sure the same sound was that very moment perhaps being heard all over the seas, from hundreds of whalemen's look-outs perched as high in the air; but from few of those lungs could that accustomed old cryhave derived such a marvellous cadence as from Tashtego the Indian's.

我們正在這樣織呀織的時候，一陣那么奇特，曳長，富有音樂狂律和可怕的聲音把我嚇了一跳，那只自由意志的線團也從我手里掉下去了。我站起來，仰望著天際，因為當(dāng)時那聲音象是長了翅膀從那上面落了下來。原來高高地站在桅頂橫木上的，正是那個發(fā)狂的該黑特佬塔斯蒂哥。他的身體急切地向前沖著，一只手象指揮棍似的直伸出來，隔了一會兒，他又驀地繼續(xù)高聲大叫起來。老實說，這聲音在當(dāng)時也許是從幾百個高棲在空中的捕鯨船的?望者同時發(fā)出來的，整個海洋都聽得到；不過，具有象這個印第安人塔斯蒂哥這樣宏亮的聲音，能夠喊出這么令人驚異的頓挫抑揚的調(diào)子的老呼號者，實在為數(shù)寥寥。

As he stood hovering over you half suspended in air, so wildly and eagerly peering towards the horizon, you would have thought him some prophet or seer beholding the shadows of Fate, and by those wild CRIes announcing their coming.

"There she blows! there! there! there! she blows! she blows!"

"Where-away?"

“哪個方向呀？”

"On the lee-beam, about two miles off! a school of them!"

“直向下風(fēng)的地方，大約在兩英里外的地方！有一大群哪！”

Instantly all was commotion.

大家立刻都騷動起來了。

The Sperm Whale blows as a clock ticks, with the same undeviating and reliable uniformity. And thereby whalemen distinguish this fish from other tribes of his genus.

抹香鯨的噴水噴得象只時鐘那樣嘀嗒嘀嗒響，那樣準確，那樣均勻可靠。這就是捕鯨者能從它們的同族中分別出抹香鯨來的根據(jù)。
