Yet with me, as with the colt, somewhere those things must exist.
但是,這種咒文似的白色,我們還沒有把它弄清楚,
Though in many of its aspects this visible world seems formed in love, the invisible spheres were formed in fright.
白色為什么對人類具有如此魔力,也還沒有弄明白;
But not yet have we solved the incantation of this whiteness, and learned why it appeals with such power to the soul;
而且,更其奇特而越發(fā)兇兆重重的是,如同我們已經(jīng)說過了的,白色為什么同時(shí)就是最具有意義的神力的象征,又是基督教的神的面具;
and more strange and far more portentous--why, as we have seen, it is at once the most meaning symbol of spiritual things, nay, the very veil of the Christian's Deity; and yet should be As It Is, the intensifying agent in things the most appalling to mankind.
而且事實(shí)上也是如此:一切事物中的強(qiáng)化了的神力,就是最使人類驚嚇的東西。
Is it that by its indefiniteness it shadows forth the heartless voids and immensities of the universe, and thus stabs us from behind with the thought of annihilation, when beholding the white depths of the milky way?
我們看到銀河的白色深淵時(shí),是不是可以說它是借著它的無定量性來遮掩宇宙的無底的空虛和無垠的空間,又暗地里懷著消滅我們的惡意來傷害我們呢?
Or is it, that as in essence whiteness is not so much a color as the visible absence of color; and at the same time the concrete of all colors;
還是說,就本質(zhì)說來,白色與其說是一種顏色,不如說是明顯的沒有顏色,同時(shí)又是各種顏色的凝結(jié)物,
is it for these reasons that there is such a dumb blankness, full of meaning, in a wide landscape of snows-a colorless, all-color of atheism from which we shrink?
是不是說,因此我們就認(rèn)為,在一片茫茫的雪景中,就有這樣一片意義深長的,沒有光彩的空白...一種我們所害怕的毫無色彩的,而又非常具有色彩的無神論呢?
And when we consider that other theory of the natural philosophers, that all other earthly hues-every stately or lovely emblazoning-the sweet tinges of sunset skies and woods;
不過,當(dāng)我們來細(xì)思自然哲學(xué)家們的另一種理論時(shí),就發(fā)現(xiàn)世間各種色彩...各種壯麗的或者可愛的美飾...夕陽西下的天際和樹林里的可愛的色調(diào);
yea, and the gilded velvets of butterflies, and the butterfly cheeks of young girls.
而且還有涂著金色絲絨似的蝴蝶,和少女的蝴蝶似的面孔;
