The hours wore on;Ahab now shut up within his cabin; anon, pacing the deck, with the same intense bigotry of purpose in his aspect.

時(shí)間在消逝...亞哈一會(huì)兒緊關(guān)在他的船長(zhǎng)室里;再一會(huì)兒又在甲板上踱著,臉色依然顯得非常固執(zhí)堅(jiān)決。

It drew near the close of day. Suddenly he came to a halt by the bulwarks, and inserting his bone leg into the auger-hole there, and with one hand grasping a shroud, he ordered Starbuck to send everybody aft.

已是將近日暮時(shí)分。他突然在舷墻邊立定,把他那只牙腿插在那邊的鏇孔里,一只手抓著護(hù)桅索,命令斯達(dá)巴克把大家都叫到船梢來(lái)。

Sir! said the mate, astonished at an order seldom or never given on ship-board except in some extraordinary case.

先生!那個(gè)大副說(shuō),他對(duì)這個(gè)除了遇到緊急情況,否則在船上是難得或者可說(shuō)是從來(lái)不會(huì)發(fā)出的命令感到很為詫異。

Send everybody aft, repeated Ahab. Mast-heads, there! come down!

把大家都叫到船梢來(lái),亞哈又說(shuō)一遍。桅頂?shù)娜搜?喂!下來(lái)!

When the entire ship's company were assembled, and with curious and not wholly unapprehensive faces, were eyeing him, for he looked not unlike the weather horizon when a storm is coming up,

船上全體人員都集合攏來(lái)了,大家都以奇異而不是完全沒(méi)有憂慮的臉色望著他,因?yàn)樗纳裆瓜笫潜╋L(fēng)雨正在到來(lái)的天氣。

Ahab, after rapidly glancing over the bulwarks, and then darting his eyes among the crew, started from his standpoint; and as though not a soul were nigh him resumed his heavy turns upon the deck.

可是,亞哈迅疾地瞥一瞥舷墻后,他那雙眼睛又在那些水手間掃射一下,接著便從他站著的地方起步,仿佛在他身旁,根本一個(gè)人也沒(méi)有似的,他又在甲板上沉重地走來(lái)走去。

With bent head and half-slouched hat he continued to pace, unmindful of the wondering whispering among the men; till Stubb cautiously whispered to Flask, that Ahab must have summoned them there for the purpose of witnessing a pedestrian feat.

他低著頭,半耷拉著帽子繼續(xù)在踱方步,一點(diǎn)也不理會(huì)到人群里的詫異的嘁嘁喳喳聲;后來(lái)斯塔布小心地對(duì)弗拉斯克咬著耳朵說(shuō),亞哈之所以要把大家召集攏來(lái),一定是要大家來(lái)欣賞他那走路的技巧。

But this did not last long. Vehemently pausing, he CRIed:

但是,這種表演并沒(méi)有持續(xù)多久,他陡地停了下來(lái),喊道:

What do ye do when ye see a whale, men?

喂,你們看到一條鯨的時(shí)候,該怎么辦?

Sing out for him! was the impulsive rejoinder from a score of clubbed voices.

高聲叫喊!有二十個(gè)聲音沖動(dòng)地齊聲應(yīng)答。

Good! CRIed Ahab, with a wild approval in his tones; observing the hearty animation into which his unexpected question had so magnetically thrown them.

好!亞哈看到他那突如其來(lái)的問(wèn)題竟這么有吸引力,弄得大家都生氣蓬勃了,不禁以一種狂熱的贊許聲氣嚷道。
