It was curious and not unpleasing, how Peleg andBildad were affected at this juncture, especiallyCaptain Bildad. For loath to depart, yet; very loathto leave, for good, a ship bound on so long andperilous a voyage--beyond both stormy Capes; a shipin which some thousands of his hardearned dollarswere invested; a ship, in which an old shipmatesailed as captain; a man almost as old as he, oncemore starting to encounter all the terrors of thepitiless jaw; loath to say good-bye to a thing soevery way brimful of every interest to him,-- poor oldBildad lingered long; paced the deck with anxious strides; ran down into the cabin to speakanother farewell word there; again came on deck, and looked to windward; looked towards thewide and endless waters, only bounded by the far-off unseen Eastern Continents; lookedtowards the land; looked aloft; looked right and left; looked everywhere and nowhere; and atlast, mechanically coiling a rope upon its pin, convulsively grasped stout Peleg by the hand, andholding up a lantern, for a moment stood gazing heroically in his face, as much as to say, "Nevertheless, friend Peleg, I can stand it; yes, I can."

看到法勒和比勒達(dá)(特別是比勒達(dá)船長(zhǎng)),在這當(dāng)兒竟動(dòng)起情感來(lái),倒是希奇而且不是不愉快的。因?yàn)樗€不愿意離去;真正十分不愿意離開(kāi)一艘航程如此長(zhǎng)。風(fēng)險(xiǎn)如此大的船到狂風(fēng)暴雨的兩個(gè)海角之外去;這艘船,他投入了辛苦賺來(lái)的幾千塊錢(qián);這艘船,是他的老船友在做船長(zhǎng);這個(gè)人年紀(jì)差不多跟他一樣大,這回又會(huì)遭遇到各處恐怖無(wú)情的驚濤駭浪;他真不愿意跟這樣一件從各方面說(shuō)來(lái)都是跟自己休戚相關(guān)的東西告別,可憐的比勒達(dá)老頭徘徊良久;步履焦急地在甲板上踱來(lái)踱去;一會(huì)兒奔到下面船長(zhǎng)室,再去道別一聲;一會(huì)兒又走上甲板來(lái),望望上風(fēng);望望那遼闊只有那極眼而不能見(jiàn)的以東方大陸為界的海洋;望望陸地,望望上空,望望右邊,望望左邊,望著這里那里而又茫無(wú)目標(biāo);最后,他機(jī)械地把一根繩子繞在栓子上,猛地抓起法勒的粗壯的手,舉起一只燈籠,在那里站了一會(huì),勇猛地緊盯著他的臉,好象是說(shuō),"法勒老兄,我還受得了;不錯(cuò),我受得了。"

As for Peleg himself, he took it more like a philosopher; but for all his philosophy, there was atear twinkling in his eye, when the lantern came too near. And he, too, did not a little run fromthe cabin to deck--now a word below, and now a word with Starbuck, the chief mate.

至于法勒呢,他對(duì)待這件事卻象個(gè)哲學(xué)家一樣;但是,他雖然有他的整套哲學(xué),可是燈籠一照攏去,仍教人看到他眼睛里掛有亮閃閃的淚珠。而且他也從船長(zhǎng)室到甲板間奔來(lái)奔。一會(huì)兒到下面去說(shuō)一句話,一會(huì)兒又跟大副斯達(dá)巴克交代一句話。
