pay作及物動詞，后面可直接跟賓語，但一般是表示錢，賬單或人的詞。如果要表示為某事或某物付錢時，需要用介詞for或是to的不定式來引導(dǎo)。
I will pay for that book.
He paid us to watch his house.
在美國，pay可作形容詞，表示“付費的”或是“收費的”，例如pay hospital(收費的醫(yī)院)和pay patient(付費的病人);
pay后可接介詞by，表示“由……支付”。

【詞義辨析】
cost, expend, spend, take, pay
這些動詞均含“花費”之意。
cost指花費時間、金錢、勞力等。其主語是物，而不能由人充當(dāng)，也不用被動形式。
expend較正式用詞，通常指為某一專門目的而花費大量金錢、時間或精力。
spend普通用詞，與cost基本同義，但主語必須是人。
take普通用詞，指需要占用空間、時間或精力等，其主語可以是人，也可以是一件事情。
pay“付款、給……報酬”，它可作及物動詞也可作不及物動詞。pay常用于以下幾種句型：①Sb.pay(s)sb.money意為“某人付款給另一個人或某人給另一個人多少報酬”。

beg比plead通俗，不用于法律范疇，指低聲下氣地請求，有時含貶義，指某人喋喋不休地要求得到幫助。
petition指正式而熱切地請愿或祈求。
entreat的意義與beg的大致相同，但較文雅。
pray指祈求，多用于宗教用語中。
