一.disaster：n.災(zāi)難
【詞義辨析】
disaster, calamity, catastrophe, misfortune
這些名詞均表示“災(zāi)難”或“不幸”之意。
disaster普通用詞，指大破壞、痛苦或傷亡。
calamity多指個人的不幸，比disaster嚴重，強調(diào)災(zāi)難引起的悲痛以及對于損失的感覺。
catastrophe語氣最強，指可怕的災(zāi)難，強調(diào)最終的結(jié)局。
misfortune多指較為嚴重的不幸，強調(diào)不幸多由外界因素所致。

instead一般與of連用作為介詞詞組，后面可接名詞和代詞意外的詞，如形容詞，副詞，動詞和介詞。
Things are now better instead of worse.
He walks slowly instead of quickly.
That increased instead of decreased our anxiety.
He laughed with instead of at us.
注意instead of和without的區(qū)別，兩者不要混用。一般情況下，用人，事，行為去代替另外的人，事，或行為時，用instead of。
I'll have tea instead of coffee, please.
我要喝茶而不是咖啡，謝謝。
表示人，事，行為不和其他的一起時，用without。
She often goes swimming without telling her mother.

instead 可以是形容詞，一般放于句首或句尾。

【錯句舉例與錯句分析】
錯句: I stayed in bed all day instead to go to work.
訂正: I stayed in bed all day instead of going to work.
翻譯: 我在床上躺了一整天，沒有去上班。
分析: instead不單獨作介詞，常以instead of形式出現(xiàn)，后加動名詞。
【例句用法】
If you can't sign your name, make a cross instead.
