一定是某個(gè)大男孩發(fā)現(xiàn)了它，把它糟蹋成這樣的。
Stuart was heartbroken.
斯圖亞特的心都碎了。
He did not know what to do.
他不知道還能怎么辦。
He sat down on a twig and buried his head in his hands.
他跌坐在一根小樹枝上，把頭埋在手里。
"Oh, gee," he kept saying, "oh, gee whiz."
“噢，該死，”他不停地說(shuō)，“噢，該死的破壞狂!”
"What's the trouble?" asked Harriet.
“怎么了?”哈麗雅特問。
"Miss Ames," said Stuart in a trembling voice, "I assure you I had everything beautifully arranged—everything. And now look!"
“埃姆斯小姐，”斯圖亞特的聲音都發(fā)顫了，“我保證曾把一切都安排得非常完美——所有的一切，可現(xiàn)在卻都完了!”
Harriet was for fixing the canoe up and going out on the river anyway, but Stuart couldn't stand that idea.
哈麗雅特準(zhǔn)備去修理那獨(dú)木舟，可是斯圖亞特卻已經(jīng)絕望了。
"It's no use," he said bitterly, "it wouldn't be the same."
“沒有用了，”他痛苦地說(shuō)，“不可能再恢復(fù)原樣了。”
"The same as what?" asked Harriet.
“原來(lái)是什么樣子?”哈麗雅特問。
The same as the way it was going to be, when I was thinking about it yesterday.
就像我昨天弄的那么好。
I'm afraid a woman can't understand these things.
我恐怕一個(gè)女人是不能做好這件事的。
Look at that string!
看那根繩子!
It's tied on so tight I could never get it off.
它系得那么緊，我絕不可能把它解下來(lái)。
"Well," suggested Harriet, "couldn't we just let it hang over in the water and trail along after us?"
“哦，”哈麗雅特建議，“我們劃船時(shí)就讓它那么拖在水里好了。”
