精靈鼠小弟 第76期:漏水的獨(dú)木舟

When Stuart arrived at his camp site by the river, he was tired and hot.

斯圖亞特來到他在河邊的營(yíng)地時(shí)，感到又累又熱。

He put the canoe in the water and was sorry to see that it leaked badly.

他把獨(dú)木舟放到水里，立刻發(fā)現(xiàn)它漏水現(xiàn)象十分嚴(yán)重。

The birch bark at the stern was held together by a lacing, and the water came in through the seam.

船尾是用樺樹皮拼成的，水就從那拼縫里滲了進(jìn)來，

In a very few seconds the canoe was half full of water.

幾秒鐘后，獨(dú)木舟里就裝了一半的水。

"Darn it!" said Stuart, "I've been swindled."

He had paid seventy-six cents for a genuine Indian birchbark canoe, only to find that it leaked.

他花了七十六美分才買下的真正的印第安樺木舟，卻是個(gè)漏水的東西。

"Darn, darn, darn," he muttered.

Then he bailed out his canoe and hauled it up on the beach for repairs.

He knew he couldn't take Harriet out in a leaky boat—she wouldn't like it.

Tired though he was, he climbed a spruce tree and found some spruce gum. With this he plugged the seam and stopped the leak.

Even so, the canoe turned out to be a cranky little craft.

If Stuart had not had plenty of experience on the water, he would have got into serious trouble with it.
