精靈鼠小弟 第36期:鼠小弟被垃圾包圍

Margalo liked it so well at the Littles' house she decided to stay for a while instead of returning to the open country.

瑪戈非常喜歡住在利特爾家的房子里，因此決定暫時不回鄉(xiāng)下去了。

She and Stuart became fast friends, and as the days passed it seemed to Stuart that she grew more and more beautiful.

她和斯圖亞特成了一對彼此忠誠的朋友，隨著時間的推移，斯圖亞特覺得她長得越來越美麗了。

He hoped she would never go away from him.

他希望她永遠也不要離開他。

One day when Stuart had recovered from bronchitis he took his new skates and put on his ski pants and went out to look for an ice pond.

一天，支氣管炎已經(jīng)好了的斯圖亞特穿上他的冰鞋，還有他的滑冰褲，想出去找一個結(jié)冰的池塘。

He didn't get far.

他并沒有走太遠。

The minute he stepped out into the street he saw an Irish terrier, so he had to shinny up an iron gate and jump into a garbage can, where he hid in a grove of celery.

因此他爬到鐵門上，跳到一個垃圾箱里，躲到里面的芹菜樹叢中。

While he was there, waiting for the dog to go away, a garbage truck from the Department ofSanitation drove up to the curb and two men picked up the can.

當他在那里等著狗跑開時，一輛從公共衛(wèi)生所開來的垃圾車停到了路邊，兩個男人走下來抬起了垃圾箱。

Stuart felt himself being hoisted high in the air.

斯圖亞特感到自己被高高地抬到了空中。

He peered over the side and saw that in another instant heand everything in the can would be dumped into the big truck.

他爬到箱子邊上一看，才知道他和別的垃圾都要一起被裝進大卡車里。

"If I jump now I'll kill myself," thought Stuart.

“如果我現(xiàn)在跳車就意味著自殺，”斯圖亞特想。

So heducked back into the can and waited.

于是他就鉆回垃圾箱等著。

The men threw the can with a loud bump into the truck,

一個男人把裝滿垃圾的箱子扔上卡車，

where another man grabbed it, turned it upside down, and shook everything out.

另一個男人則在垃圾里四處翻著。

Stuart landed on his head, buried two feet deep in wet slippery garbage.

斯圖亞特的頭上埋了兩腳高的垃圾。

All around him was garbage, smelling strong.

他的周圍都是垃圾，散發(fā)出強烈的臭味兒。

Under him, over him, on all four sides of him--garbage.

身下，頭頂，四周——都是垃圾。

Just an enormous world of garbage and trashand smell.

就像來到了一個巨大的臭氣薰天的垃圾世界。

It was a messy spot to be in.

這里面太臟了。

He had egg on his trousers, butter on his cap, gravy on his shirt, orange pulp in hisear, and banana peel wrapped around his waist.

他的褲子上有一個雞蛋，帽子上沾上了奶油，襯衫上灑上了肉湯，耳朵上掛著桔子瓣兒，腰上則纏著香蕉皮。
