　　Although the Gauls continued to fight desperately1, for years on end, he attacked them repeatedly, and everywhere he went he left troops in control behind him.

　　雖然高盧人連續(xù)數(shù)年進(jìn)行拼死抵抗，他還是一再戰(zhàn)勝他們，他到處都留下軍隊(duì)駐守。

　　Once Gaul had become a Roman province the inhabitants soon learnt to speak Latin, just as they had in Spain.

　　打那以后，高盧便一直是羅馬的行省，那里的居民漸漸習(xí)慣與講拉丁語(yǔ)，跟在西班牙一樣。

　　And this is why French and Spanish, which come from the language of the Romans, are known as Romance languages.

　　After the conquest of Gaul, Caesar turned his army towards Italy. He was now the most powerful man in the world.

　　Other generals who had previously2 been his allies he attacked and defeated.

　　And after he had seduced3 Cleopatra, the beautiful queen of Egypt, he was able to add Egypt to the Roman empire.

　　Then he set about putting it in order.

　　然后他著手整頓秩序。

　　For this he was ideally suited, for he had an exceptionally orderly mind.

　　He was able to dictate4 two letters at the same time without getting his thoughts in a tangle5.
