 　　Egypt was then governed by a family of generals – the Ptolemies.

　　The Seleucids ruled Mesopotamia, and the Attalids Asia Minor1.

　　塞琉古王室統(tǒng)治了美索不達米亞，安提克王室統(tǒng)治了小亞細亞。

　　India was simply abandoned.

　　印度完全丟失。

　　But although the empire was in pieces, Alexander's grand project slowly went on taking shape.

　　但是盡管這個帝國已經(jīng)分崩離析，亞歷山大的計劃卻慢慢實現(xiàn)了。

　　Greek art and the spirit of Greece had enetrated Persia and passed on through India to China.

　　希臘的藝術和希臘的精神傳播至波斯并繼續(xù)傳播至印度甚至中國。

　　Meanwhile the Greeks themselves had learnt that there was more to the world than Athens and Sparta,

　　同時希臘人懂得了雅典和斯巴達還不是整個世界。

　　and more to do than waste their lives in endless squabbling between Dorians and Ionians.

　　And, having lost the little political power they once had,

　　the Greeks went on to be the bearers of the greatest intellectual force there has ever been, the force we know as Greek culture.

　　This force was protected and preserved in some very special fortresses2.

　　這權力受到一些非常特殊的堡壘保護和保存。

　　Can you guess what those fortresses were?

　　They were libraries.

　　是圖書館。

　　Alexandria, for instance, had a Greek library that held around 700,000 scrolls3.

　　譬如亞歷山大港就有這樣一座希臘圖書館，它約有70萬卷書。

　　Those 700,000 scrolls were the Greek soldiers who set off to conquer the world.

　　這70萬卷書是希臘士兵，它們占領了整個世界。

　　And that empire is still standing4 today.

　　這個世界帝國今天還存在。
