Zarathustra, however, looked at the people and wondered.

蘇魯支望著人群，甚驚奇。

Then he spoke thus:Man is a rope stretched between the animal and the Superman--a rope over an abyss.

便如是說(shuō)：人便是一根索子，聯(lián)系於禽獸與超人間——駕空于深淵之上。

A dangerous crossing, a dangerous wayfaring, a dangerous looking-back, a dangerous trembling and halting.

是，危險(xiǎn)過(guò)渡，一危險(xiǎn)底征途，一危險(xiǎn)底回顧，一危險(xiǎn)底戰(zhàn)栗與停住。

What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal: what is lovable in man is that he is an OVER-GOING and a DOWN-GOING.

人之偉大，在于其為橋梁，而不是目的;人之可愛(ài)，在于其為過(guò)渡與下落。

I love those that know not how to live except as down-goers, for they are the over-goers.

我愛(ài)，不知道生活的人，便是墮落者，然而是過(guò)渡者。

I love the great despisers, because they are the great adorers, and arrows of longing for the other shore.

我愛(ài)，大蔑視者，因?yàn)樗麄兪谴蟪缇凑撸虮税兜倪b情的羽箭。

I love those who do not first seek a reason beyond the stars for going down and being sacrifices,

我愛(ài)，不求有物于星球之外的人，以墮落而自為犧牲，

but sacrifice themselves to the earth, that the earth of the Superman may hereafter arrive.

卻犧牲于土地，使此土地有一日將歸于超人。

I love him who lives in order to know, and seeks to know in order that the Superman may hereafter live.

我愛(ài)，因求知而生活的人，求知，使超人得以生。

Thus seeks he his own down-going.

如是自求其墮落。

I love him who labors and invents, that he may build the house for the Superman,

我愛(ài)，工作著發(fā)明著的人，意在建超人之所居，

and prepare for him earth, animal, and plant: for thus seeks he his own down-going.

為之安排土地，禽畜，花木，如是自求其墮落。

I love him who loves his virtue: for virtue is the will to down-going, and an arrow of longing.

我愛(ài)，自愛(ài)其德行的人，因其德行為墮落之意志，與遙情的羽箭。

I love him who reserves no share of spirit for himself, but wants to be wholly the spirit of his virtue: thus walks he as spirit over the bridge.

我愛(ài)，不保留一涓滴精神于己的人，卻欲為其德行的整個(gè)精神，他猶如精靈走過(guò)這橋梁。

I love him who makes his virtue his inclination and destiny: thus, for the sake of his virtue, he is willing to live on, or live no more.

我愛(ài)，以德行為傾向?yàn)檫\(yùn)命的人，他為德行之故欲猶有生且欲無(wú)生。

I love him who desires not too many virtues.

我愛(ài)，不欲德藝過(guò)多的人，

One virtue is more of a virtue than two, because it is more of a knot for one's destiny to cling to.

一德多于二德，因其更成為附系運(yùn)命的結(jié)子。

I love him whose soul is lavish, who wants no thanks and does not give back: for he always bestows, and desires not to keep for himself.

我愛(ài)，其心靈甚奢費(fèi)的人，不欲人謝，不為報(bào)答，因其時(shí)時(shí)贈(zèng)與，不欲自有遺留。
