One day, about a week before Christmas, a greatstorm came up. The sky grew dark.

一天，大約在圣誕節(jié)的前一周，來了一場強(qiáng)烈的大風(fēng)暴。天空變暗了。

The wind blew a howling gale. It made a whiningnoise.

風(fēng)怒號(hào)著刮來刮去。這引起了一片抱怨聲。

Windows rattled. Shutters came off their hinges.

窗子嘎嘎亂叫。百葉窗掙脫了他們的鉸鏈。

Old newspapers and candy wrappers were picked upby the wind and scattered like confetti.

舊報(bào)紙和糖紙被風(fēng)扯得像婚禮上撒的五彩碎紙一樣，在空中亂揚(yáng)。

Many of the creatures in the Zoo became restless and uneasy.

動(dòng)物園里的很多動(dòng)物都變得焦躁不安了。

Over in the Elephant House, the elephants trumpeted in alarm.

Lions roared and paced back and forth.

獅子們咆哮著走來走去。

The Great Black Cockatoo screamed.

大黑鳳頭鸚鵡嚇得尖叫起來。

Keepers rushed here and there, shutting doors and windows and making everything secureagainst the awful force of the gale.

管理員們到處奔忙著，關(guān)上門和窗戶，力圖讓一切都能在這場可怕的風(fēng)暴中安然無恙。

The waters of Bird Lake were ruffled by the strong, mighty wind, and for a while the lakelooked like a small ocean.

鳥湖里的水被強(qiáng)猛的風(fēng)攪動(dòng)著，不久便變得像一個(gè)小海洋了。

Many of the water birds sought protection on the island.

很多水鳥都在島上尋覓著安全的庇護(hù)所。

Louis rode out the gale on the lake, in the lee of the island.

路易斯搏擊著湖上的狂風(fēng)，向島上的避風(fēng)處奔去。

He faced the wind and kept paddling with his feet, his eyes bright with wonder at the strengthof the blast.

他迎著風(fēng)不停地用他的腳劃著水，風(fēng)暴的威力令他的眼里閃出驚奇的光。

Suddenly he saw an object in the sky. It was coming down out of the clouds.

突然，他看到天空中出現(xiàn)了一個(gè)物體。它正在沖過云層向這里來。

At first, he couldn't make out what it was.

開始，他還辨不清那到底是什么東西。

"Maybe it's a flying saucer," he thought.

“那大概是飛碟，”他想。

Then he realized that it was a large white bird, struggling desperately to come in against thewind.

接著他才明白那是一只白色大鳥，正在不顧一切地想要逆風(fēng)而降。

Its wings were beating rapidly.

它的翅膀拍打得很快。

In a moment it splashed down and flopped ashore, where it lay sprawled out, almost as if itwere dead.

眨眼間，它就濺落下來，艱難地爬上岸，伸開四肢躺在那里，幾乎像是死了一樣。

Louis stared and stared and stared. Then he looked again.

路易斯盯住它看了又看。然后他又端詳了半天。

"It looks like a swan," he thought.

“它好像一只天鵝，”他想。

It was a swan.

它就是一只天鵝。

"It looks like a Trumpeter Swan," he thought.

“它好像一只號(hào)手天鵝，”他想。

It was a Trumpeter Swan.

它就是一只號(hào)手天鵝。

"My goodness," said Louis to himself, "it looks like Serena.

“天哪，”路易斯自語，“它好像塞蕾娜。

It is Serena. She's here at last. My prayers have been answered!"

就是塞蕾娜。她終于來這兒了。我的祈禱應(yīng)驗(yàn)了!”
