Still averted from her, the young man made a sign ofaffirmation.

年輕人仍然別開身子，卻做了個動作，表示肯定。

"For the sake of the pueblo–to make the rain comeand the corn grow. And to please Pookong andJesus. And then to show that I can bear pain withoutcrying out. Yes," and his voice suddenly took on anew resonance, he turned with a proud squaring ofthe shoulders, a proud, defiant lifting of the chin "toshow that I'm a man … Oh!"

“為了村子，為了求雨，為了莊稼生長，為了討菩公和耶穌的歡喜，也為了表現(xiàn)我能夠忍受痛苦，不哭不叫，我想挨鞭子。”他的聲音突然換了一種新的共鳴，一挺胸脯，驕傲地、挑戰(zhàn)地揚起了下巴，“為了表現(xiàn)我是個男子漢……啊!”

He gave a gasp and was silent, gaping.

他倒抽了一口氣，張著嘴，不說話了：

He had seen, for the first time in his life, the face of a girl whose cheeks were not the colour ofchocolate or dogskin, whose hair was auburn and permanently waved, and whose expression(amazing novelty!) was one of benevolent interest.

他是平生第一次看見這樣一個姑娘，面龐并非巧克力色或狗皮色;頭發(fā)紅褐色，永遠髦曲;臉上表現(xiàn)了溫厚的關懷(奇怪得驚人!)。

Lenina was smiling at him; such a nice-looking boy, she was thinking, and a really beautifulbody.

列寧娜對他笑著。多么好看的小伙子，她在想，真正漂亮的身材。

The blood rushed up into the young man's face; he dropped his eyes, raised them again for amoment only to find her still smiling at him, and was so much overcome that he had to turnaway and pretend to be looking very hard at something on the other side of the square.

血涌上了小伙子的臉，他低下頭，好一會才抬了起來，卻發(fā)現(xiàn)她還在對他笑。他太激動了，只好掉開了頭，假裝專心望著廣場對面的什么東西。

Bernard's questions made a diversion.

伯納提出的幾個問題岔開了他的注意。

Who? How? When? From where?

他問他是什么人?從哪兒來的?為什么來的?什么時候來的?

Keeping his eyes fixed on Bernard's face (for so passionately did he long to see Lenina smilingthat he simply dared not look at her),

青年把眼睛盯在伯納臉上(他急于想看那姑娘的微笑，卻簡直不敢看她)，

the young man tried to explain himself.

對自己的情況做了解釋。

Linda and he–Linda was his mother (the word made Lenina look uncomfortable)–werestrangers in the Reservation.

在保留地琳妲(他媽媽，列寧娜一聽媽媽兩字就不好意思了)和他都是外來人。

Linda had come from the Other Place long ago, before he was born, with a man who was hisfather.

琳妲是很久以前跟一個男人從“那邊”來的，那時他還沒有出生。那男人就是他的父親。

(Bernard pricked up his ears.)

(伯納尖起了耳朵。)

She had gone walking alone in those mountains over there to the North, had fallen down asteep place and hurt her head.

琳妲從那邊的山里獨自往北方走，摔到了一道懸崖下面，腦袋受了傷。

("Go on, go on," said Bernard excitedly.) Some hunters from Malpais had found her andbrought her to the pueblo.

(“說吧，說吧，”伯納激動地說。)幾個從馬爾佩斯去的獵人發(fā)現(xiàn)了她，把她帶回了村子。

As for the man who was his father, Linda had never seen him again.

琳妲從此再也沒有看見那個男人，他的父親。

His name was Tomakin. (Yes, "Thomas" was the D.H.C.'s first name.)

那人的名字叫湯瑪金(沒有錯，主任的名字就是湯瑪士)。

He must have flown away, back to the Other Place, away without her–a bad, unkind, unnaturalman.

他一定是飛走了，沒有帶她就回到那另外的地方去了——那是個狠心的、不近人情的壞蛋。

"And so I was born in Malpais," he concluded. "In Malpais." And he shook his head.

“因此我就在馬爾佩斯出生了，”他結束了他的話，“在馬爾佩斯出生了。”他搖了搖頭。

The squalor of that little house on the outskirts of the pueblo!

村莊附近那小屋可真骯臟!

A space of dust and rubbish separated it from the village.

一片滿是灰沙和垃圾的空地把這小屋跟村子分了開來。

Two famine-stricken dogs were nosing obscenely in the garbage at its door.

兩條饑餓的狗在小屋門前的垃圾里不知羞恥地嗅著。

Inside, when they entered, the twilight stank and was loud with flies.

他們走進屋里，昏暗里臭烘烘的，蒼蠅的嗡嗡聲很大。

"Linda!" the young man called.

“琳妲。”年輕人叫道。

From the inner room a rather hoarse female voice said, "Coming."

“來了。”一個很嘶啞的女聲回答。

They waited. In bowls on the floor were the remains of a meal, perhaps of several meals.

他們等著。地上的幾個碗里有吃剩的飯，說不定已是好幾頓剩下的了。

The door opened.

門開了。

A very stout blonde squaw stepped across the threshold and stood looking at the strangersstaring incredulously, her mouth open.

一個非常肥壯的金發(fā)白膚的印第安女人跨進了門檻，大張著嘴站在那兒，呆望著兩個生客，不敢相信。

Lenina noticed with disgust that two of the front teeth were missing. And the colour of theones that remained … She shuddered.

列寧娜厭惡地注意到，她已掉了兩顆門牙，還沒有掉的那些牙的顏色也…… 她起了雞皮疙瘩。
