Hi, I'm Anjali Rao in Seoul. My guest today is the movie star heartthrob and the most recognizable face in South Korea, Jang Dong-Gun. This is Talk Asia.

Things really started to take off for you in 2000 when you had a starring role in the movie Friend, which at the time was the highest-grossing Korean film ever. What was it like being a part of something so huge?

你在2000年主演《朋友》之后，事業(yè)就開(kāi)始起飛，當(dāng)時(shí)《朋友》也是有史以來(lái)票房最高的韓國(guó)影片。參與如此龐大的一場(chǎng)盛事有什么感覺(jué)?

When I first chose the film, even after we'd filmed the entire movie, no one really expected-I certainly didn't expect, nor did any of the actors expect-that it would be so well received. My intention for the film was to show a different side of myself. I actually believed that it was more of an artistic film in that sense, but because it became so popular at the time, I somehow think that the popularity may have, in a sense, undermined the true artistic value that the movie might actually have.

我一開(kāi)始選擇這部影片的時(shí)候，甚至直到片子殺青之際，都沒(méi)有人想到——我完全沒(méi)想到，其他演員也都一樣——根本沒(méi)想到這部影片會(huì)這么受歡迎。我當(dāng)初出演這部影片是為了要展示向己不同的一面。我其實(shí)認(rèn)為這部影片比較像是藝術(shù)片，但因?yàn)楹髞?lái)非常熱門，所以就某種程度來(lái)說(shuō)反而降低了這部片真正的藝術(shù)價(jià)值。

That movie though paved the way for your starring role in Taegukgi about the Korean War, which again smashed all known box-office record[s]. Tell us about your experiences of that film.

不過(guò)，那部電影讓你后來(lái)有機(jī)會(huì)主演《太極旗飄揚(yáng)》這部關(guān)于朝鮮戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)的電影，而且又再次打破了所有的票房紀(jì)錄。請(qǐng)告訴我們你拍攝這部影片的經(jīng)歷。

The theme of the movie is the Korean War. The Korean War was one of the most significant historical events in modern Korean history. I think that its significance is something that could be well expressed and presented in a film. Personally, my role in the film's was quite appealing to me, and I was quite keen on doing it. And my grandfather's birthplace is in North Korea, and I had heard many stories about the Korean War as a child when I was growing up.

這部影片的主題是朝鮮戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)。這是韓國(guó)現(xiàn)代史當(dāng)中最重要的一個(gè)歷史事件。我認(rèn)為電影能夠充分表達(dá)并且呈現(xiàn)這個(gè)事件的重要性。就我個(gè)人來(lái)說(shuō)，我在片中飾演的角色很吸引我，因此非常希望參與演出。而且我的祖父出生于朝鮮，所以我小時(shí)候聽(tīng)過(guò)很多朝鮮戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)的故事。

So in 2006 you staged a one-man protest in front of the general assembly here against the government's new policy on domestic films. Didn't last very long though, only a couple of minutes before you got swamped by thousands of fans. Are you concerned about the current state of the film industry in 50uth Korea, as so many others are?

2006年，你在這里的國(guó)會(huì)議事堂展開(kāi)一個(gè)人的示威活動(dòng)，反對(duì)政府對(duì)國(guó)產(chǎn)影片的新政策。不過(guò)沒(méi)有持續(xù)太久，因?yàn)閹追昼姾竽憔捅粩?shù)以千計(jì)的影迷困住了。你和許多人一樣對(duì)韓國(guó)電影產(chǎn)業(yè)的現(xiàn)狀感到憂慮嗎?

Many think the industry is stagnating, but I differ in opinion. In total I've had 15 years of acting, and in the film industry I've had 10 years of experience. Looking back on those 10 years, I can see there'd always been ups and downs within the industry. And when you say things are slow and not going well in the field, the difference rather depends on how many good Korean films have been made.

許多人認(rèn)為韓國(guó)電影產(chǎn)業(yè)已經(jīng)陷入停滯，但我不同意。我總共已經(jīng)演了15年的戲，在電影方面也有 10年的經(jīng)驗(yàn)了?；仡欉@10年，我可以看到這個(gè)產(chǎn)業(yè)一直都有高低起伏。如果說(shuō)這個(gè)領(lǐng)域各方面發(fā)展緩慢，情況不好，這其實(shí)取決于最近究竟拍出了多少部好的韓國(guó)影片。

As of now, the reduced quota of films, the rising wages, and also because of the poor performance of the Korean films this year, people are saying things are going bad. I think it only means good films have not been produced lately, that's al l. $0 I still have a positive15 outlook, and I believe as more good films are made, positive sentiments will be picked up quickly.

就目前而言，由于影片配額減少，工資提高，再加上韓國(guó)影片今年表現(xiàn)不佳，所以很多人就說(shuō)這個(gè)產(chǎn)業(yè)已經(jīng)開(kāi)始走下坡路。我認(rèn)為這只是表示最近沒(méi)有拍出好的影片而已。所以，我對(duì)未來(lái)的展望還是樂(lè)觀的，而且我認(rèn)為只要拍出多一點(diǎn)的好片子，正面的情緒就會(huì)很快被帶動(dòng)起來(lái)。
