As Ali sat motionless in front of his late father's hut, made of mud molder, a mournful look on his face.

艾里一動(dòng)不動(dòng)地坐在他已故父親那座用灰泥漿砌成的小屋前，滿面悲哀。

His father had passed away a week earlier, his moral remains cremated.

他父親在一星期前去世了，遺體已經(jīng)被火化。

Ali, who had walked all the way home from Abidjan for 5 days and as many nights was in morning.

艾里得知噩耗從阿必得澗趕回家中，一路走了五天五夜。

He was now all alone in this world, his mother having died in child birth.

現(xiàn)在他一人在家服喪，這個(gè)世界上只剩他孤零零的一個(gè)人了，他母親因難產(chǎn)已去世。

What a moron I was, not to have the motivation to go to university while the old man was still around and able to pay.

我真是個(gè)白癡！老頭在世時(shí)還有能力支付我上大學(xué)的費(fèi)用，而我居然連上大學(xué)的動(dòng)機(jī)都沒有！

If only I'd had a motive for doing something constructive. Ali thought to himself.

要是那時(shí)我就有從事建設(shè)性事業(yè)的動(dòng)機(jī)該多好！艾里自言自語(yǔ)道。

The old man was always used to arranging for everything.

老頭在世的時(shí)候總是把一切都安排好了，

The opportunities he offered me were a multiple of what was available to the other young men from my village.

他給我提供的機(jī)會(huì)比起我們村里的其他年輕人來(lái)說(shuō)要多出幾倍。

Ali shrugged his shoulders. He was mortified as he contemplated his future prospects.

艾里聳聳肩。想到將來(lái)，他感到很難堪。

Whatever is going to motivate me now? how can I get my wasted life in motion?

He thought to himself.

他苦苦思索著。

One motive kept reoccurring, study. How much he now wish to take up some serious study!

有一個(gè)念頭不斷閃現(xiàn)：學(xué)習(xí)！現(xiàn)在他多么希望他曾經(jīng)認(rèn)認(rèn)真真地學(xué)習(xí)過。

Of all the multiple and manifold choices his father had offered him, morphology must have been the most multi-fascinated subjects.

在他父親曾經(jīng)提供給他的多種多樣的選擇中，形態(tài)學(xué)應(yīng)該算是最具多樣性的一門學(xué)科了。

The study of how multi-sally organisms form into plants animals, then multiply to form a multitude of species was fascinating to Ali.

多細(xì)胞組織如何形成一種種植物和動(dòng)物，然后又如何繁殖成如此大量的物種，這些對(duì)艾里來(lái)說(shuō)都極具吸引力。

It is a truly exciting subject. Ali thought to himself.

這確實(shí)是一個(gè)很誘入的學(xué)科，艾里想，

There is nothing at all mundane about it.

這門學(xué)科的確是卓爾不群非同凡響。
