There seems to be little to Malcom that is inherently meaningful in his existence. It is the mechanics of things that interest him most. Perhaps that is why he has chosen to become a mechanical engineer. It suits his mechanistic attitude to life. The universe to Malcom is just one big mechanism and anything that can be mechanized will be mechanized seems to be another model of his. There is nothing meditated about him at all. Confronted with anything that does not work as it should, Malcom just can’t help himself but meddle with it, to try to put it right, to his way of thinking that is.

對(duì)于馬爾科姆來(lái)說(shuō)，他的存在沒(méi)有內(nèi)在的有意義的東西。最吸引他的是物體的機(jī)件。也許這就是能為什么選擇成為機(jī)械工程師的原因吧。它正好適合他的機(jī)械式的生活態(tài)度。宇宙在馬爾科姆眼里只是一個(gè)大的運(yùn)作機(jī)制，“所有能被機(jī)械化的東西將會(huì)被機(jī)械化”，這好像是他的另外一句箴言。關(guān)于他自己根本就沒(méi)有什么值得深思的東西。一旦遇見(jiàn)什么東西不能正常工作，他就忍不住要干涉，試圖修好它(當(dāng)然那是符合他的思維方式的)。

Malcom’s view of things is quite the opposite of Mell, another friend of mine. Mell just loves to meditate, trying to meander through the maze that is called life. Much in the manner of Saint Dogstin, the medieval mystic, just like that Saint, Mell derives much joy in life, through the medium of listening to the melody of the wind in the leaves and the melodic song of birds at daybreak. Mell is happy to live on a comparatively meager salary, not for him, the carries of the world. The mass media are of little or no interest to him.

馬爾科姆對(duì)事物的看法正好和我的另外一個(gè)朋友麥爾相反。麥爾喜歡沉思，試圖在被稱(chēng)為生活的迷宮里漫步，就像中世紀(jì)的神秘人物——圣人奧古斯丁那樣。和那位圣人一樣，通過(guò)自然的媒介麥爾傾聽(tīng)到風(fēng)吹樹(shù)葉發(fā)出的悅耳的音調(diào)和晨鳥(niǎo)鳴囀時(shí)那富有旋律的歌聲。他從中獲得了很多生活的樂(lè)趣。他滿足于相對(duì)微薄的薪水。世界不是他所關(guān)心的，他對(duì)大眾媒體也不感興趣。

Be prepared for some major melodrama whenever Malcom and Mell get together, there is nothing at all that can be called melodious in the verbal exchanges. It is usually me on such occasions who is called in as a mediator, as to mediate on their seemingly endless quarrels.

他們倆碰面時(shí)會(huì)有一場(chǎng)鬧劇可看的，請(qǐng)做好思想準(zhǔn)備吧!在他們的唇槍舌戰(zhàn)中沒(méi)有悅耳的話。這種情況下，我往往成了他們的調(diào)停者，被叫去給他們似乎永無(wú)休止的爭(zhēng)吵進(jìn)行辮旋。
