“ Smithers, don’t you think it’s ironic that your irregular night-time activities are in inverse proportion to your reputation as an expert in the area of invertebrate research?” the director of the academy demanded to know.
“斯密德斯，難道你不認為自己無規(guī)律的夜生活與你作為無脊椎動物研究領(lǐng)域的專家的聲望成反比是具有諷刺意味的嗎?”研究院的主任要求知道答案。
“ I should like to invoke my right to remain silent, sir,” Smithers defiantly replied.
“我希望援用我保持沉默的權(quán)利，先生，”斯米德斯反駁道。
“ Your invocation of some right or other will do you no good at all. I find your irresponsible behaviour, coupled with your irreverent attitude, quite irreconcilable with your position. Unless you come clean, Smithers, we shall have to investigate those allegations against you very seriously, indeed. That’s not an inviting prospect, neither for you, nor for the academy. Pending the outcome of the investigation, you will be put on involuntary leave.”
“你援用這樣或那樣權(quán)利對你一點好處都沒有。我認為你不負責(zé)的行為，加上你不敬的態(tài)度與你的地位非常不能協(xié)調(diào)。斯米德斯，除非你坦白交代，否則我們真的必須對反對你的主張進行嚴肅調(diào)查。這個前景對你和研究院來說都不誘人。在等待調(diào)查結(jié)果的時候，你必須強制離開。”
“Sir, my behaviour both in and out of work has been irreproachable, apart only from the fact that I have found the odd glass or two of gin and tonic irresistible.”

My decision is irreversible: You are on indefinite leave pending the investigation. The irony of it is, of course, Smithers, that you were such an outstanding member of our team when you first got here. Tell me, what’s got into you lately?”

Smithers stood in silence.
