27. Florence Nightingale, Pioneer of Modern Hospital Nursing

27. 弗洛倫斯·南丁格爾——現(xiàn)代醫(yī)療護(hù)理的先驅(qū)

In the early nineteenth century, hospitals were not as good as they are now, and nurses were careless and poor in knowledge. A great many soldiers died of wounds and fever because the doctors were not skillful enough to cure them.

在19世紀(jì)早期，醫(yī)院并不像現(xiàn)在這么好，護(hù)士們粗心大意而且知識(shí)貧乏。很多士兵死于傷口和發(fā)燒，因?yàn)獒t(yī)生沒有足夠的專業(yè)技能來醫(yī)治他們。

When Miss Nightingale was a little girl, she used to like playing with her dolls and pretending to nurse them. When she grew up, she used to visit the poor people near her house and look after them when they were ill. She wanted to be a nurse, but her father said, "Look at the woman who do nursing in the hospital. I don't want you to be like that!" He had plenty of money and let Florence travel to many other countries. Wherever she went she visited hospitals and worked in them herself. Then she was placed in charge of a small hospital. Later, she went to learn nursing in Germany and France.

當(dāng)南丁格爾女士還是個(gè)小女孩的時(shí)候，她常常喜歡和她的玩具一起玩兒，假裝照顧它們。當(dāng)她長(zhǎng)大了，她常探望她房子附近的窮人，在他們生病時(shí)照顧他們。她想要成為一名護(hù)士，但是她的父親說：“看看那些在醫(yī)院里做護(hù)士的女人，我不想讓你像她們一樣!”他擁有很多錢，讓弗洛倫斯去很多其他國(guó)家旅行。無論她去哪里，她都要去參觀醫(yī)院，并且自己去那里工作一段時(shí)間。之后她負(fù)責(zé)管理一個(gè)小的醫(yī)院。再后來，她去德國(guó)和法國(guó)學(xué)習(xí)護(hù)理。

Miss Nightingale worked all day to see that the wounded soldiers were well looked after and properly nursed. Every night she walked around the hospital with a small lamp, visiting the patients. The soldiers were pleased to see her. They gave her the name of "The Lady of the Lamp". She and her nurses saved hundreds of lives and she stayed at the hospital until the war was over.

南丁格爾女士整日工作來保證受傷的士兵能夠得到很好的照料和恰當(dāng)?shù)淖o(hù)理。每天晚上她都提著一盞小燈在醫(yī)院里四處走動(dòng)，探訪病人們。士兵們很樂意看見她。他們稱她為“提燈女神”。她和她的護(hù)士門拯救了數(shù)以百計(jì)的生命，她一直待在醫(yī)院里直到戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)結(jié)束。

After the war she returned to England and was honored for her services by Queen Victoria. But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money to build the Nightingale Home for Nurses in London. She started to train nurses in hospitals. Soon all the big hospitals in England had their own training schools for nurses. Hospitals became clean and cheerful places and nurses were much more skillful. She also wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several countries. Today, nurses all over the world remember "The Lady of the Lamp".

戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)結(jié)束后她回到了英國(guó)并且被維多利亞女王嘉獎(jiǎng)。但是弗洛倫斯說她的工作只是個(gè)開始。她籌集資金在倫敦為護(hù)士們建立了“南丁格爾之家”。很快所有英國(guó)的大醫(yī)院有了他們自己專門的護(hù)士訓(xùn)練學(xué)校。醫(yī)院成為了一個(gè)干凈而且令人感到愉快的地方，護(hù)士們也更加專業(yè)了。她還寫了一本關(guān)于公共衛(wèi)生的書在若干個(gè)國(guó)家印刷。今天，全世界的護(hù)士都記得“提燈女神”。

Florence died at the age of ninety, still trying to serve others through her work as a nurse. lndeed, it is because of her that we honor nurses today.
