年度最美英音來啦！英國女王2018圣誕致辭

英國定于2019年3月29日正式脫離歐盟，但英國議會現在仍未能就“脫歐”協(xié)議達成共識。在社會陷入嚴重分歧之際，英女王伊麗莎白二世將發(fā)表“脫歐”前最后一份圣誕致辭，強調社會和諧以及尊重他人的重要性，寄語民眾團結一致。她還稱，較以往任何時刻，世界此時更需要和平和善意。

今年致辭的主題是尊重，英國女王呼吁人們對持相反觀點的人表現出更多的尊重。她說：“即使存在著最深刻的分歧，以尊重他人和作為人類同胞對待他人，也是增進理解的第一步。”英國女王的圣誕演講充滿了儀式感，是英國人民在圣誕節(jié)始終保留的一個節(jié)目。

For many, the service of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s College Cambridge is when Christmas begins. Listened to by millions of people around the world, it starts with a chorister singing the first verse of Once in Royal David City.

對于許多人而言，圣誕節(jié)的慶祝始于劍橋大學國王學院的《Nine Lessons and Carols》圣詩禮拜。禮拜的一開始唱詩班吟唱《Once in Royal David City》的第一小節(jié)，整個禮拜被全世界數百萬的人收聽。

The priest who introduced this service to King’s College Chapel exactly 100 years ago was Eric Milner-White. He has served as a military chaplain in the First World War.

整整一百年前，牧師Eric Milner-White將這個禮拜引入了國王學院教堂。他曾經以軍中教士的身份參與了第一次世界大戰(zhàn)。

Just six weeks after the Armistice, he wanted a new kind of service which with its message of peace and goodwill spoke to the needs of the time.

2018 has been a year of centenaries.

The Royal Air Force celebrated its 100th anniversary with a memorable fly past, demonstrating a thrilling unity of purpose and execution. We owe them and our armed services our deepest gratitude.

My father served in the Royal Navy during the First World War, he was a midshipman in HMS Collingwood at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.

我的父親在一戰(zhàn)期間服役于英國皇家海軍部隊。在1916年的Jutland戰(zhàn)役上，他是HMS Collingwood號上的一名海軍軍官少尉之候補軍官。

The British fleet lost 14 ships and 6,000 men in that engagement, my father wrote in a letter “how and why we were not hit beats me”.

Like others, he lost friends in the war, but Christmas we become keenly aware of loved ones who have died, whatever the circumstances, but of course we would not grieve if we did not love.

像其他人一樣，他在戰(zhàn)爭當中失去了朋友。然而每次圣誕期間，我們會尤其思念我們逝去的愛人，不管他們是什么樣的原因離開。當然，如果我們不愛的話，悲傷也無從談起。

Closer to home, it has been a busy year for my family.

With two weddings and two babies and another child expected soon. It helps to keep the grandmother well occupied.

家族的兩場婚禮、兩個寶寶和一個即將誕生的新生命讓我這個祖母一直都有不少事情做。

We have had other celebrations too including the 70th birthday of the Prince of Wales. Some cultures believe a long life brings wisdom. I’d like to think so.

家里面也有其他的慶?；顒?，包括威爾士親王70歲的生日。有些文明習俗認為長壽通常會帶來智慧。我也愿意這么認為。

Perhaps part of that wisdom is to recognise some of life’s baffling paradoxes such as the way human beings have a huge propensity for good and yet a capacity for evil.

也許那些智慧的一部分是意識到生命里不可名狀的矛盾，例如人類有強烈的對于善和美的傾向，同時又有惡的一面。

Even the power of faith which frequently inspires great generosity and self-sacrifice can fall victim to tribalism but through the many changes I have seen over the years, faith, family and friendship have been not only a constant for me but a source of personal comfort and reassurance.

即使這些常常能激發(fā)慷慨行為和自我犧牲的信仰的力量，也可能淪落成種族派別主義的犧牲品。但是，通過我在這些年中看到的變化，信仰，家庭和友誼對我而言不僅僅是一個永恒的主題，更是帶給我寬慰和安心的源泉。

In April the Commonwealth heads of government met in London. My father welcomed just eight countries to the first such meetings in 1948. Now the Commonwealth includes 53 countries with 2.4 billion people, a third of the world’s population.

今年4月，英聯邦國家的首腦于倫敦會晤。我的父親在1948年的第一次會晤中僅迎來了8位國家首腦。而現如今，英聯邦共有53個成員國和24億人口，這占世界總人口的三分之一。

Its strength lies in the bonds of affection it promotes and a common desire to live in a better more peaceful world.

Even with the most deeply held differences treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step towards greater understanding.

即使是有最深刻的分歧，對他人施以尊重以及平等的對待他人，始終是人類邁向更好地互相理解的良好開端。

Indeed the Commonwealth Games held this year on Australia’s Gold Coast are known universally as the friendly games because of their emphasis on goodwill and mutual respect.

英聯邦國家運動會也于今年在澳大利亞的黃金海岸舉行。本次運動會是眾所周知的友誼賽，正因為我們對善意和相互尊重的不斷強調。

The Christmas story retains its appeal since it doesn’t provide theoretical explanations for the puzzles of life. Instead, it’s about the birth of a child and the hope that birth 2,000 years ago brought to the world.

耶穌誕生的故事一直保持著它的魅力并不是因為它為生活上的謎題提供了理論上的解釋。換言之，圣誕故事是關于一個孩童的出生，以及這個2000年前的誕生為世界帶來的希望。

Only a few people acknowledged Jesus when he was born. Now billions follow him. I believe his message of peace on earth and goodwill to all is never out of date. It can be heeded by everyone. It’s needed as much as ever.

耶穌在降生之時，鮮被承認。但現如今，數以億計的信徒信奉著基督教。我相信耶穌像世人所傳遞的信息中對世界的和平以及對全人類的友愛是永遠不會過時的。這樣的信念應該被每一個人聽從，我們也和過去任何時候一樣需要它。
