Long live world Peace!
“God bless you,” said the old woman.
“(God) damn it,” cursed the man.
Heaven help us.
May you be happy all your life.
May there never be another world war!
Oh, if he only knew how we miss him.
If only I hadn't lost it.
If only she were not so terribly frightened of Aunt Ruth.
4.用在as it were中:
He is, as it were, a walking dictionary.
捎胏ould, might, would, should等代替can, may, will, shall等使口氣顯得更婉轉(zhuǎn),有人也看作是一種虛擬語氣,如:
Could you leave your telephone number with us?
Might I have your pen for a minute?
What would you advise me to do?
I should be glad to talk to him.
Wouldn't it be better to do it ourselves?
You might as well do it today.
The situation could still be remedied, I suppose.
