Hi, welcome to Xiaoming Yingyu! Let’s start with ourslang for today.
歡迎來到小明英語!讓我們從俚語開始吧
OK. You all know the word “read”. It means to readsome words, read a book.
你們都知道read這個(gè)單詞吧,意思是閱讀
But you can also understand what we call “bodylanguage”.
你也可以讀懂肢體語言
If you can look at somebody and know that they are feeling sad, or maybe that they are happy,
如果你看到一個(gè)人并且能知道他們是否憂傷,開心,
or they are lying to you, or they forgot to do their homework again. That means you arereading that person.
或者他們在對你撒謊,或者他們又忘了寫作業(yè)。意思就是你在讀那個(gè)人
You are understanding what they mean. If you do this really well, you can say that you arereading a person like a book.
你可以讀懂他們的意思。如果你很擅長,你可以說你可以像讀一本書一樣去讀人
I have some friends who are really good at reading people, and some other friends who aren’t.
我有一些朋友很擅長讀人,也有些朋友不擅長
That’s how you use that word in a sentence. There’s another slang phrase that says “readbetween the lines”.
你就可以這樣把它用在句子里。另外一個(gè)俚語叫做read between the lines
When you read a book, you read line after line. But sometimes there’s a little bit more meaningto a book than what you read.
當(dāng)你讀書的時(shí)候,你會一行一行地讀。但是有的時(shí)候讀書也有更深一些的意思
A story about a young person moving to the city represents how life is full of opportunity. It’snot just about that person.
一個(gè)關(guān)于年輕人來到城市的故事講述了生活里的很多機(jī)遇,不僅僅是關(guān)于那個(gè)年輕人
A friend might spend a lot of time talking about how this girl ignoring him,
一個(gè)朋友可能會總跟你說一個(gè)女生怎樣忽視他
how he feels like she’s being so rude to him by not responding to his texts or ever spendingtime with him.
他感到她很粗魯,因?yàn)樗龔膩聿换囟绦呕蛟谝黄鹣嗵?/p>
And then he might say “Can’t you read between the lines? I really like her.”
然后他可能會說“你難道看不出來嗎,我真的很喜歡她”
In this case, your friend is asking you to understand the bigger meaning, not just exactly whathe tells you.
在這里,你的朋友想讓你去明白真正的含義,不僅僅是他告訴你的內(nèi)容
Or another case, if your dad is telling you to get better grades,
或者,如果你爸爸告訴你要考高分
he’s trying to tell you between the lines that he cares about you and wants you to work harderso that you can have a better future.
他其實(shí)是在告訴你他很關(guān)心你,想讓你好好努力,有一個(gè)更好的未來
That’s our slang for today, now let’s talk about sentence structure.
這就是我們今天的俚語,現(xiàn)在我們來講句型
Here’s our first example: “There are differences in the amount of time required to completereading this book.”
我們第一個(gè)例子是需要讀完這本書的時(shí)間因人而異
“There are differences in the amount (or number) of A required for B.
完成B所需要的A的數(shù)量因人而異
Another example is “There are differences in the amount of money required to buy a car.”
另外一個(gè)例子是需要買一輛車的錢因人而異
You might need a lot of money, you might not need very much.
你可能需要很多錢,也可能不需要很多
There are differences in how much you need of A, money, to do B, buy a car.
你需要的A,錢,去做B,買車,是因人而異的
One last example for you: “There are differences in the number of hotdogs required by a personto be full.”
最后一個(gè)例子是每個(gè)人吃熱狗的數(shù)量因人而異
I don’t need many hotdogs to be full, but my friend sometimes can eat a lot.
我不需要吃很多熱狗就可以吃飽,但是我的朋友有時(shí)候會吃很多
So there are differences in how many hotdogs you need to be full. Let’s talk about etymology.
所以吃多少個(gè)熱狗因人而異。我們來說說詞源吧
Our root word for today is glut, or gluten. In Latin, this means glue, or sticky substance.
我們今天的詞根是glut或者gluten。在拉丁語里,它的意思是膠水,或者粘的物質(zhì)
Which of course glu kind of sounds like glue, right? So that’s the obvious one. That’s the oneyou can tell right away this root is used for.
Glu聽上去像glue吧?這個(gè)很明顯。你可以立刻就直到這個(gè)詞根在這里的用途
But there are a couple of other words that’s also used for. You might hear a lot, especially ifyou like cooking.
不過也有另外兩個(gè)單詞用這個(gè)詞根。如果你喜歡做飯,那你可能經(jīng)常聽說下面這個(gè)詞。
Gluten is the part of wheat that has a lot of protein, and it’s what makes dough sticky.
Gluten(面筋)是小麥富有蛋白質(zhì)的部分,這也是為什么面團(tuán)會很粘
So you hear glue for gluten, the sticky part of wheat. Glue is also used in glutinous, whichmeans gummy, chewy, sticky.
所以你聽到了glue,就像在gluten里,小麥粘的那部分。Glue在glutinous里也用到了,意思是粘性的
In English,糯米is called glutinous rice because it’s sticky. And if you are glutinating something, you are sticking them together.
在英語里,糯米叫做glutinous rice。如果你在glutinate某物,你在把它們粘在一起
If you glutinate two things, you are putting glue and you are putting something else on topand you can’t pull them apart.
如果你在glutinate兩個(gè)物體,可以用膠水把其中一個(gè)粘在另外一個(gè)上面,你無法把它們分開
So if you see glu at the beginning of a word, you have a pretty good chance of guessingcorrectly that it means to stick something to something else.
如果你看到了一個(gè)單詞以glu開始,那么它很有可能是和粘讓某物相關(guān)的
Thank you so much for joining us today. I hope you learned something.
謝謝來到今天的課程,我希望你學(xué)到了一些知識
