To them, we were a God-less country

在他們看來 我們是一個不信神的國家

But in fact, there is no country

但事實上 沒有任何國家

that protects the core of every faith and philosophy known to human kind

比美利堅合眾國更愿意保護

free will more than the United States of America

人類的各種信仰和哲學

That protection, however, rests upon our constant vigilance

不過這種保護 需要依賴于我們持續(xù)的警覺

We like to think that the principle of separation of church and state is settled

我們傾向于認為 政教分離的原則已經(jīng)確立

It is not

實際上沒有

And it never will be

而且永遠不會

It is up to us to guard it fiercely

我們需要堅決地擁護它

and to ensure that equality under the law means equality under the law for everyone

確保法律條文下規(guī)定的平等 對于每個人都是平等的

If you want the freedom to worship as you wish

如果你希望按照自己希望的那樣進行宗教活動

to speak as you wish, and to marry whom you wish

按照希望的那樣發(fā)表言論 同希望的人結婚

you must tolerate my freedom to do so or not do so as well

你就必須寬容我像這樣做的自由

What I do may offend you

我做的事可能會冒犯你

You may find my actions immoral or unjust

你可能覺得我的行為不道德或是非正義

But attempting to restrict my freedoms in ways that you would not restrict your own

但你不能用自身沒有的限制方式來限制我的自由

leads only to injustice

否則這只會導致不公

We cannot deny others the rights and privileges that we demand for ourselves

我們在自己要求權利的同時 不能否定其他人的相同權利

And that is true in cities

對于城市是這樣

and it is no less true at universities

where the forces of repression appear to be stronger now, I think

than they have been since the 1950s
