Several thousand people have been taken part in marches in Washington and New York to protest against police violence in the United States. The demonstrations follow recent high-profile cases of killings of unarmed black men by US police. Many demonstrators braving the cold weather carried placards, saying black lives matter and stop racist police. The civil rights leader A told the crowds in Washington legislative change was needed.

The United States Senate is holding a rare Saturday session for serious votes on a huge spending bill that lawmakers need to approve to avert a government shut-down. The bill worth 1.1 trillion dollars is to fund the federal government until September next year. Washington’s current spending authority expires at midnight on Saturday. The bill has already been passed by the House of Representatives.

The American envoy Todd Stern urged all nations to accept the compromised text, or efforts to draw up a legally-binding agreement next year in Paris will be threatened.

He called the Russian action serious, unacceptable and downright dangerous.
