Civil society activists in Georgia are campaigning to save what international archaeologists believe could be the world's oldest gold mine. Scientists say it dates back nearly 5400 years but the Georgian government has recently allowed commercial mining to start there. It says the site has no historical value.

Several hundred protesters are marching beneath a grassy hillside in southern Georgia. They fear that a small but important piece of human history may soon be lost to big business.

The hill they want protected is known as Sakdrisi. International archaeologists believe that a network of tunnels inside it date back 5400 years.

Until recently, Sakdrisi enjoyed protected status. But then a commercial gold mining company became interested. RMG Gold estimates that up to 14 tons of gold can be recovered from the Sakdrisi area. RMG's commercial director.

RMG Gold already mines in the region and employs up to 3000 people. Last year, a government appointed commission ruled that there was no evidence of ancient gold mining and the company can now expand its operation.
