a ballpark figure 的意思是：“粗略估計，大概的數(shù)字”，ballpark 指的是專供球類比賽的公園，特指大型的棒球場。在棒球比賽時都會報當天的觀眾人數(shù)，例如49132人，這個數(shù)49132就是ballpark figure，但這只是一個大約數(shù)字而已。因此，當美國人說"Can you give us a ballpark figure?"時，他/她要表達的意思就是:"Can you give us a rough number?"、"Can you give us an approximate amount?"。
