at the mercy of直譯過來就是：“在……的仁慈下”，這個短語的正確意思是：“受……支配，由……負(fù)責(zé)”。因此，當(dāng)美國人說"The new manager leaves this project at the mercy of his subordinates."時，他/她要表達(dá)的意思就是:"The new manager leaves this project in the charge of his subordinates."、"The new manager lets his subordinates manage the project."。
