在通常情況下，people表示“警察”的總稱，含有“警方”“警察當局”之意，其前通常用the（有時也可省略），形式上是單數(shù)，但含義上為復數(shù)；用作主語時，謂語要用復數(shù)。如：

The thief was handed over to the police. 這個小偷已經(jīng)送交派出所了。

They denounced him to the police as a criminal. 他們向警方告發(fā)他是罪犯。

The police had to employ force to break up the crowd. 警察不得不用武力驅散人群。

The police have bugged the office. 警察在這個辦公室裝了竊聽器。

The police have studied the case of murder. 警察已研究了這起謀殺案。

The police have no clue to his identity. 警察沒有可以確定他的身份的任何線索。

注意，當表示“一個警察”時，不能用它，即不能說a [one] police，而應根據(jù)情況用a policeman / a policewoman；不過，當表示多個警察時，可用它。如：
