幾個常用名詞的易錯說明

一、people可用表復數(shù)形式嗎

1. 當people表示“人”“人們”時，只用單數(shù)形式，但總是表示復數(shù)意義。如：

Young people like surfing the Internet. 年輕人喜歡上網(wǎng)。

表示“一個人”時，不能用one people，可根據(jù)情況改用one person, one man, one woman, one boy等。

2. people表示“民族”時是可數(shù)名詞，其前可用不定冠詞，也可復數(shù)形式。

We Chinese are a hardworking people. 我們中國人是勤勞的人民。

Ireland was inhabited by two peoples. 愛爾蘭居住著兩個民族。

比較：

How many peoples live in Asia? 亞洲有多少個民族?

How many people live in the room? 這房間住了多少人?

有時它還可與few, many等連用。如：

Few peoples in the world can boast (of) such an old civilization as ours. 世界上沒有幾個民族有像我國民族這樣悠久的文化。

二、police是表總稱還是表個體

原則上說，people表示“警察”的總稱，含有“警方”“警察當局”之意，其前通常用the（有時也可省略），形式上是單數(shù)，但含義上為復數(shù)；用作主語時，謂語要用復數(shù)。如：

I saw him being taken away by the police. 我看到他正被警察帶走。

I’m against doing anything till the police arrive. 在警察到來之前我反對做任何事。

The police believe him to be dangerous. 警方認為他是個危險人物。

注意，當表示“一個警察”時，不能用它，即不能說a [one] police，而應(yīng)根據(jù)情況用a policeman / a policewoman；不過，當表示多個警察時，可用它。如：

There were over 100 police on duty. 有超過百名警察值班。

三、fun可連用不定冠詞嗎

fun表示“有趣的事”“娛樂”“玩笑”等，永遠不可數(shù)，既不能連用不定冠詞，也不能用復數(shù)形式。如：

揚帆駕舟十分有趣。

誤：It’s a great fun to sail a boat.

正：It’s great fun to sail a boat.

我們在海灘上玩得開心。

誤：We have a great deal of funs on the beach.

正：We have a great deal of fun on the beach.

四、clothes與clothing有何區(qū)別

兩者均可表示衣服的統(tǒng)稱，但clothes是一個沒有單數(shù)形式的復數(shù)名詞（永遠是復數(shù)），而clothing則是一個沒有復數(shù)形式的單數(shù)名詞（永遠不可數(shù)）。如：

His clothes were torn and bloody. 他的衣服撕破了并染有血跡。

Your clothes are in the top drawer on the left. 你的衣服放在左邊上面的抽屜里。

比較而言，clothes的含義比較具體，而clothing的含義則比較抽象。如：

Hang the clothes on the line. 把這些衣服掛在晾衣繩上。

Our clothing protects us against the cold. 我們的衣服可以御寒。

若不考慮其細微區(qū)別，兩者常可換用。如：

Warm clothes are [clothing is] a must in the mountains. 在山里厚衣服是必不可少的。

另外，在a wolf in sheep’s clothing（披著羊皮的狼）這一習語中，習慣上用clothing。如：

They were our worst enemies—wolves in sheep’s clothing. 他們是我們最危險的敵人——是披著羊皮的狼。
