[名詞用法]名詞作定語用單數(shù)還是復(fù)數(shù)

1. 原則上說，一個(gè)名詞用于另一個(gè)名詞前作定語時(shí)，習(xí)慣上要用單數(shù)，不用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

stone bridge 石橋(不能說 stones bridge)

morning exercise 早操(不能說 mornings exercise)

story book 故事書(不能說 stories book)

coffee cup 咖啡杯(不能說 coffees cup)

baby girl 女嬰(不能說 babies girl)

school gate 校門(不能說schools gate)

eye drops眼藥水(不能說eyes drops)

test paper考卷(不能說tests paper)

book report讀書報(bào)告(不能說books report)

train station火車站(不能說trains station)

plane ticket機(jī)票(不能說planes tickets)

2. 在某些特殊情況下，一個(gè)名詞用于另一個(gè)名詞前作定語有時(shí)也用復(fù)數(shù)，主要見于以下幾種情形：

(1) 有些只有復(fù)數(shù)形式的名詞，則用復(fù)數(shù)作定語。如：

goods train 貨車(若說good train，則會(huì)誤解為“好的火車”)

clothes shop 服裝店(若說cloth shop，則會(huì)誤解為“布料店”)

an arts degree文科學(xué)位(習(xí)慣上不說an art degree)

(2) 有些習(xí)慣上要用復(fù)數(shù)的名詞，當(dāng)它用作定語，也習(xí)慣上要用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

a savings account 儲(chǔ)蓄帳戶(savings表示“存款”時(shí)只用復(fù)數(shù)形式)

(3) 有時(shí)使用復(fù)數(shù)名詞作定語，可能與語義有關(guān)。如：

3. 當(dāng)man和woman用于名詞前作定語，表示性別時(shí)，若被修飾的名詞為復(fù)數(shù)，則man和woman也要用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

注：eight hours sleep 之類的說法，既可表達(dá)為eight hours’ sleep，也可表達(dá)為 an eight-hour sleep。類似的如：
