Last week at a dinner-party, the hostess askedme to sit next to Mrs Rumbold. Mrs Rumboldwas a large, unsmiling lady in a tight blackdress. She did not even look up when I took myseat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plateand in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried tomake conversation. 'A new play is coming to" TheGlobe" soon,' I said. "Will you be seeing it ?"'No,'sheanswered. 'Will you be spending your holidaysabroad this year?' I asked. 'No,' she answered. 'Willyou be staying in England?' I asked. 'No,' she answered. In despair, I asked her whether shewas enjoying her dinner. 'Young man,' she answered,'if you ate more and talked less, we wouldboth enjoy your dinner !'

語法歸納：虛擬語氣

一句話總結(jié)：虛擬語氣只用于非真實條件句中，表達假設(shè)的或?qū)崿F(xiàn)可能性不大的情況，通常表達的只是一種愿望、假設(shè)、懷疑或是推測。

條件從句時態(tài)→ 主句時態(tài)

與現(xiàn)在事實相反：一般過去時→ should / would / could / might + 動詞原形

與將來事實相反：should.動詞原形→ should / would / could / might + 動詞原形

與過去事實相反：過去完成時→ should / would / could / might + have + 過去分詞

If we left now, we should arrive at the Capital Airport on time.

如果我們現(xiàn)在就走，我們應(yīng)該可以準時到達首都機場。

If it should rain tomorrow, we would call off the game.

明天萬一下雨，我們就取消比賽。

語言點1 large 和 unsmiling兩個形容詞修飾lady，作前置定語，而 in a tight black dress則是介詞短語作后置定語修飾lady。

語言點2 修飾男人“胖”的詞匯：strong，heavy，sturdy;修飾女人“胖”的詞匯：large，plump。

3. She did not even look up when I took my seat beside her.

當我在她旁邊坐下時，她甚至連頭都沒有抬一下。
