Aid frustration in Philippines

Welcome to the latest global news recorded at 01:00 GMT on Wednesday, the 13th of November. I am Fredrick Dolf with highlights from across BBC World Service News today.

Coming up, "I've never seen anything like this. You see kids lining in the streets asking for food." Early official estimate of people kill has been revised downwards. Many thousand remain desperate for food, clean water and other essentials.

Also, "in general one day, we are going to execute someone. They gave them a spade or shovel so they could dig their own grave."

"Did they make you kill anyone?" "Unfortunately, I was part of several operations."

The experiences of young Colombians who managed to escape after being forcefully recruited by leftwing rebel groups. Also in this podcast, Egypt's government says it will lift a state of emergency and curfew imposed when Muslim Brothers supporters began mass protests. And later we'll be looking back at the life of British composer Sir John Tavener who's died.

But first the Philippines authorities have revised down the initial estimate that typhoon Haiyan killed up to ten thousand people as a toll through the islands of central Philippines. The official estimate now stands around 2.5 thousand all five days on since the storm. Serious threats remain-lack of drinking water, medicines and as this young woman described a lack of food.

"We have food for only three to four days. What will we do for the next days? We can survive without these houses. We can sleep anywhere. But we need food, only food."

Governments and aid agencies around the world have launched appeal for donations to help the survivers, as has the United Nations. It's asked for an initial 300 million dollars. Speaking to the BBC today has been John Ging-director of operations of OCHA-the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

"The aid effort is going as fast as we possibly can but of course the scale of the crisis is massive. And the destruction to the infrastructure is what hampering as to get to the people where they most need our assistance. We are pushing very hard on this. "
