Typhoon kills more than 100

Welcome to the latest global news recorded at 14:00 GMT on Saturday, the 9th of November. I am Rebecca Musten with a selection of highlights from across BBC World Service News today.

Coming up, the Red Cross in the Philippines says that it fears many hundreds of people may have been killed after the most powerful storm recorded battered the islands.

"It was like a tsunami. And instead of being generated by an earthquake, it was really the typhoon that pulled the surface sea level and brought it up by 4 to 6 meters."

Also in the podcast, no deal yet in negotiations over Iran's nuclear program;how the Night of the Broken Glasses affecting Germany today 75 years after the pogroms.

But we go first to the Philippines in the aftermath the most power typhoon so far to hit land. More than a hundred people are reported to have been killed by Typhoon Haiyan which left a trial of devastation across the country as winds blowing at more than 200 hundred kilometers an hour and torrential rain batters the islands. Aid agencies say that they are struggling to reach power to the country. Dr. Mahoe Legmei runs the Philippine government's early warning system for disasters. He's described the effect of the typhoon.

"And that it was like a tsunami. And instead of being generated by an earthquake, it was really the typhoon that pulled the surface sea level and brought it up by 4 to 6 meters."

We hear some emergency relief is getting through by air. Our correspondent John Donasen is trying to get to the worst affected areas. I spoke to him as he prepared to set off from the capital Manila.

"Well, we are actually at one of the main military airports in the capital Manila at the moment. We've seen the first shipments of aid getting out to large military cargo planes heading to one of the worst affected areas in the province of Leyte and in particular, to the coastal town of Tacloban where some 200,000 people live and they got the full force of the typhoon when it struck at dawn on Friday at morning. And the first images have been coming through from local TV down there showing the extent of the damage-the whole streets are apparently flattened, houses wiped out and a lot of people just wandering around looking pretty dazed. And in Tacloban itself, a report that at least 120 people have been killed."
