Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war.

We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground.

The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

那些在這里戰(zhàn)斗的勇士，活著的和死去的，已使這塊土地神圣化了，遠非我們的菲薄能力所能左右。世人會不大注意，更不會長久記得我們在此地所說的話，然而他們將永遠忘不了這些人在這里所做的事。相反，我們活著的人應該獻身于那些曾在此作戰(zhàn)的人們所英勇推動而尚未完成的工作。

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

【人物簡介】

亞伯拉罕·林肯(Abraham Lincoln，1809年(己巳年)-1865年)，美國政治家，第16任總統(tǒng)(任期：1861年3月4日-1865年4月15日)，也是首位共和黨籍總統(tǒng)。在其總統(tǒng)任內，美國爆發(fā)了內戰(zhàn)，史稱南北戰(zhàn)爭。林肯擊敗了南方分離勢力，廢除了奴隸制度，維護了國家的統(tǒng)一。但就在內戰(zhàn)結束后不久，林肯不幸遇刺身亡。他是第一位遭到刺殺的美國總統(tǒng)，更是一位出身貧寒的偉大總統(tǒng)。2006年，亞伯拉罕·林肯被美國的權威期刊《大西洋月刊》評為影響美國的100位人物第1名。最新版5美元紙幣正面就是：亞伯拉罕·林肯的照片。
