[00:05.88]2 Talking about university

[00:12.54]So what do you do,Jane? Are you working or studying or what?

[00:19.10]I'm doing business management at the London Business School, actually.

[00:24.66]Oh right. That sounds good. What year are you in?

[00:30.30]My third, unfortunately.I've got my finals in the spring.

[00:35.74]I'm really worried about them.

[00:39.37]Yes,I can imagine. So what're you going to do when you graduate?

[00:45.71]Have you decided yet?

[00:49.37]Yes,I'm going to take a year off and go travelling a bit

[00:55.25]and then I'm going to try to get onto a Master's course somewhere.

[01:00.58]Oh yes?What in?

[01:03.82]International finance.

[01:07.47]Wow.Have you applied anywhere yet?

[01:11.84]Not yet,but there's a course in Leeds I'm very interested in.

[01:17.90]Leeds? I've heard it's got a very good reputation.

[01:23.54]What do you need to do to get in?

[01:27.67]Well,obviously,I need to get a good grade and then I have to go for an interview.

[01:34.54]Oh right.Well,good luck.

[01:39.79]Thanks.I'll need it.Anyway,Lee,what about you? What do you do?

[01:46.16]I'm doing a one-year art course at my local college

[01:57.52]and I'd like to do art history at university next year.

[02:02.85]Oh right.Have you applied anywhere yet?

[02:07.50]Yes,I have,actually.I've applied to Goldsmith's College

[02:13.15]and they've offered me a place if I pass the course I'm doing at the moment.

[02:19.78]Oh wow! That's great.Congratulations!

[02:25.21]I've heard it's got a really good reputation as well.

[02:30.07]Thanks,yes,they do-especially for arts subjects.

[02:36.00]I'm worried about how I'll be able to live in London, though.

[02:41.46]I've heard it's very expensive.

[02:45.09]Yes,it is,believe me!

[02:48.62]I'm going to work through the summer and try to save some money,

[02:54.08]but I guess I'll have to find a part-time job next year as well.

[03:00.14]Yes,probably.

[03:03.30]3 Using grammar:going to

[03:53.85]My son,Danny,is in his second year at university studying computing.

[04:05.68]He's not enjoying it. He tells me it's boring and too hard.

[04:12.13]He says he has to go to too many lectures,

[04:16.81]and he doesn't really have enough time to do the essays and projects he has to write.

[04:23.47]He wants to drop out and apply to do American studies at a different university,

[04:30.03]but I say he shouldn't.

[04:34.08]Last night we had a big argument about it while we were having dinner.

[04:40.14]'You don't understand. It was different when you went to university!'

[04:45.81]he shouted and then he left the house.

[04:50.77]Actually,I really do understand

[04:55.92]and he is right to say things were different when I went to university.

[05:01.98]Twenty-five years ago, being a student in Britain was really easy.

[05:08.53]We didn't have to pay anything to study at university.

[05:13.70]It was completely free.

[05:17.36]In fact, when I went to university the government actually GAVE me money.

[05:23.60]And I mean,gave.

[05:27.26]I got a grant of over two thousand pounds

[05:32.23](which was a lot of money in those days)

[05:35.78]and I was free to spend it,and I never had to pay any of it back at all.

[05:42.15]Nowadays,lots of students(or their parents!)

[05:47.40]have to pay two or three thousand pounds for their course.

[05:52.97]They also have to pay for food, somewhere to live, books, bills and everything else.

[06:01.30]The government gives you a loan,

[06:05.17]which you then have to pay back after you graduate.

[06:10.21]Most people have to get a part-time job while they're studying.

[06:15.38]I used to work in the summer holidays,

[06:20.03]but I didn't have to get a job during term-time,

[06:24.71]so I could just concentrate on studying.

[06:28.65]I say concentrate on studying,

[06:32.41]but actually a lot of the time we just sat around and chatted to each other,

[06:38.58]watched French films,read books,

[06:43.23]went on demonstrations or went to parties.

[06:47.59]I only had to go to ten hours of lectures each week,

[06:53.23]so I had lots of time to write my essays and do everything else I wanted to do.

[06:59.71]And of course, almost all students lived away from home.

[07:05.35]We had a lot of freedom-

[07:09.01]we didn't have to worry about coming home late or bringing friends home,

[07:15.07]because our parents weren't there. It was fun and easy.

[07:21.31]I just chose the course I wanted to do,which was politics and history.

[07:28.18]I don't think you can do that now.

[07:32.13]I know Danny really wants to do American studies,

[07:37.40]and I'm sure it'd be interesting,

[07:40.96]but who would give him a job when he finishes his degree?

[07:45.71]I went travelling ofr six months after I graduated

[07:51.17]because it was easy to find work.

[07:54.93]I got a job in banking very quickly,

[07:59.97]but he'll have to pay back the money he's borrowed.

[08:04.55]So he needs to get a job which pays good money straight after graduating.

[08:11.21]That's why I want him do do his computing degree.

[08:16.46]It'll be better for him in the end.

[08:20.53]2 While you listen

[08:31.48]OK.Let's go through the answers to Exercise 2,then.

[08:38.03]What did you get for Number 1? Anyone?

[08:43.18]Hi.Morning,Miss.Morning everyone.

[08:52.61]Morning? It's nearly ten o'clock,Adam.

[08:57.78]Yes,like I said...good moring.

[09:02.64]And that's it? Aren't you going to apologise or explain why you're late...again?

[09:10.58]Oh,that.Yes,OK.Sorry...I'm late because my alarm clock didn't go off,OK?

[09:21.14]Right!It's not the first time that's happened,is it!

[09:26.88]If I were you,I'd buy myself another one.

[09:31.64]And make sure this one works...Anyway,open your book.

[09:37.99]We're on Page 62.Please,Miss.

[09:42.95]Yes,Adam.What is it this time?

[09:48.20]Could you open the window? It's really hot in here.

[09:52.95]It's making me feel sleepy.

[09:56.61]OK,OK.Sherry,you're the nearest.Could you just open the window there, please?

[10:03.69]Yes,OK.There.Is that all right?

[10:10.46]Yes,great.Thanks.Right,OK.Page 62.

[10:17.61]Exercise 2.What did you get for Number 1?

[10:23.26]Sorry,Miss.I did do my homework, but I forgot to bring my books with me.

[10:30.02]I was in such a hurry to get here after I woke up late.

[10:35.30]Well,why don't you just share with the person next to you,Adam? OK?

[10:42.06]Ahmed...could you just let Adam share your book, please?

[10:47.63]Thanks.RIGHT...Number 1-at last! It's B.

[10:55.99]Yes,good.OK,And Number 2?(sound of mobile phone)Whose mobile it that?

[11:05.97]Hello? Oh,hi.How are you?Yes,I'm fine.I'm good.

[11:16.41]Listen,wait a minute...

[11:19.89]sorry,Miss,but is OK if I just answer this? It's important.

[11:25.74]Adam,you know the rules. You're not allowed to use mobiles in the classroom.

[11:32.30]I know.I'm sorry,I really am...but it's really really important.

[11:38.78]Is it OK if I just answer it?

[11:42.93]I'll only be one minute.It won't happen again,I promise

[11:48.49]OK,OK,answer it if you have to,

[11:53.46]but could you just go outside while you're talking.

[11:58.81]And you've only got one minute!...

[12:03.96]Ok,where were we? I've forgotten what we were doing.

[12:11.32]Number 2.

[12:14.07]Oh,thanks.Yes,Number 2.Anyone?

[12:19.71]4 Asking for permission
