it's the main pedestrian thoroughfare in the city and as you can see the riot police are out in force,skirmishing with demonstrators and firing tear gas.

A group called The Taksim Solidarity Platform had organized the protest were planing to go to Istanbul Central Gezi Park, which has been the focus of nearly a month of unrest in Turkey.

A court has ruled for the government to stop its plans.

The riot police had been using water cannons and tear gas.

And that's Turkish government official have said, they will not allow this square to be used by protestors;

they insist the park at the center of this unrest, will be opened to the public within a matter of days.
