Farmer John was suing a trucking company forinjuries sustained in an accident. The company'slawyer was questioning John.
農(nóng)夫約翰因?yàn)橐馔馐鹿适軅馗嬉患邑涍\(yùn)公司，該公司律師正在質(zhì)問(wèn)約翰。
"Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'mfine?'" said the lawyer.
“你在車禍現(xiàn)場(chǎng)是不是說(shuō)過(guò)‘我沒(méi)事’?”律師說(shuō)道。
Farmer John responded, "Well, I'll tell you whathappened. I had just loaded my favorite mule Bessie into the..."
農(nóng)夫約翰回答：“這個(gè)嘛，事情是這樣的。那時(shí)我剛把我心愛(ài)的騾子貝西裝進(jìn)...”
The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at thescene of the accident, this man told the police officer that he was just fine.
律師打斷說(shuō)：“法官大人，我只是想證明一件事情，就是這個(gè)人曾在車禍現(xiàn)場(chǎng)告訴警察他沒(méi)事。”
"Now several weeks later, he is suing my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simplyanswer the question."
“現(xiàn)在幾個(gè)月過(guò)去了，他卻控告我的當(dāng)事人，我認(rèn)為有詐騙的嫌疑。請(qǐng)法官叫原告直接回答問(wèn)題。”
But the Judge was interested in Farmer John's story and said, "I'd like to hear what he has tosay about his mule Bessie."
不過(guò)法官對(duì)農(nóng)夫的說(shuō)辭很感興趣，于是說(shuō)：“我想聽(tīng)聽(tīng)他對(duì)騾子貝西怎么說(shuō)。”
John proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into thetrailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stopsign and smacked my truck right in the side."
約翰繼續(xù)說(shuō)道：“是這樣的。正如我剛才所說(shuō)，我把我心愛(ài)的騾子貝西裝進(jìn)拖車后，這輛大型半掛車便拉著拖車在公路上行駛，結(jié)果它闖過(guò)停車標(biāo)志，我的拖車就這樣啪的一聲被它甩到一邊。”
"I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting and didn'twant to move. However, I could hear old Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was hurt."
“我摔進(jìn)一條小水溝，貝西則摔倒另一條。雖然我當(dāng)時(shí)因?yàn)槭軅惶軇?dòng)，但卻聽(tīng)到老貝西的嗚咽哀鳴聲，我知道它受傷了。”
"After the accident a police officer arrived. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning. So hewent over to her. After he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes.Then he came across the road with his gun in his hand and looked at me."
“發(fā)生車禍后，警察就來(lái)了。他聽(tīng)到貝西的呻吟聲后便過(guò)去看看它怎么樣，結(jié)果看了以后便掏出槍，超貝西兩眼中間開(kāi)了一槍把它給斃了。接著他拿著槍，到馬路另一邊來(lái)看我。”
"He remarked, 'Your mule was in such bad shape I had to shoot her. How are you feeling?'"
“他說(shuō)：‘你的騾子傷得很嚴(yán)重，我不得不開(kāi)槍了結(jié)它。你還好嗎?’”
