第11單元 逃跑
Red and yellow trimmed skirts whirled past her head like silk halos. Mary hugged her knees. They werebruised and dirty. She watched the gypsies dance around the fire and play their tambourines.
紅邊和黃邊的裙子像絲質(zhì)光圈一樣在她頭頂上旋轉(zhuǎn)著?,旣惐е遣羵呐K膝蓋,看著這群吉普賽人一邊打著鈴鼓,一邊圍繞著火堆起舞。
Mary was eight. She lived in an orphanage run by a cruel woman. Each night Mary was given stale bread for dinner. Every day Mary had to work hard. So that day Mary ran away from the orphanage.
瑪麗今年八歲,住在一家性格殘酷的女人所開的孤兒院里。瑪麗每晚只能吃不新鮮的面包,而且每天都要辛苦地工作;所以那天瑪麗便從孤兒院逃了出來。
She walked all over town looking for food or work. She had to keep out of night. If anyone sawher, they would send her back to the orphanage. Mary was so hungry, she even tried to steal food from a market, but she was caught and she had to run away.
她走遍全鎮(zhèn),希望能找到食物或者工作,而且還要小心不被人看到;如果有人看到她,他們就會把她送回孤兒院、瑪麗獨自很餓,甚至還想去市場頭東西吃,可是被逮到了,只好趕緊逃跑。
That night, Mary was very hungry. She met another girl who did not have any parents. "Come with me," said the girl. "I know where you can get food." Mary followed the girl through a dark road. The girl took her to the gypsies.
那天晚上,瑪麗餓得要命,結(jié)果遇到另一個同樣失去雙親的女孩,她說:“跟我來,我知道哪里有東西吃。”瑪麗跟這名女孩走過一條黑暗的道路,她帶她來到一群吉普賽人那里。
Mary was scared. The gypsies were known for being bad people. But these women were beautiful. They gave her food and a place to sleep. Mary never went back to the orphanage.
瑪麗很害怕,因為吉普賽人士有名的壞人;可是這群女人卻很美麗,還給她東西吃和地方睡覺?,旣悘拇嗽僖矝]有回孤兒院了。
