1. 解詞釋義
Be Greek to sb. 字面意思是“對于某人來說都是希臘語”,引申為某人“一竅不通”“完全不懂”的意思,相當于beyond one’s understanding。
這個短語源于出自其莎士比亞的名劇Julius Caesar。西塞羅要告訴他的朋友凱撒就要被殺死了,可當時凱撒在場。為了保密,西塞羅就用希臘語對他的朋友講了這件事。參與這一謀殺計劃的吉亞斯卡曾經(jīng)聽到過這一計劃。后來,對這一計劃表示關(guān)心但又不知具體內(nèi)情的人就去問吉亞斯卡聽到了什么。吉亞斯卡巧妙地回答:"For my own part, it was Greek to me.",表示他完全不知道西塞羅說的是什么。
