The two sessions are the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

兩會是指“全國人民代表大會”和“中國人民政治協(xié)商會議”。

兩會(two sessions, liǎng huì)

全國人民代表大會[quán guó rén mín dài biǎo dà huì]：the National People’s Congress (NPC)

中國人民政治協(xié)商會議[zhōng guó rén mín zhèng zhì xié shāng huì yì]：the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)

The NPC is the highest organ of state power.

全國人民代表大會是最高國家權(quán)力機關(guān)。

People vote for deputies who perform important jobs like electing the president and vice-president.

人民通過民主選舉選出代表，代表自己行使權(quán)利，比如選舉國家主席和副主席。

The CPPCC’s roles include political consultation, and bringing people from all political parties, ethnic groups and walks of life into discussions about state affairs.

中國人民政治協(xié)商會議的主要職能是政治協(xié)商和民主監(jiān)督，組織參加政協(xié)的各黨派團體和各族各界人士參政議政。

主席：president

副主席：vice-president

政治協(xié)商：political consultation

關(guān)于兩會，有許多容易混淆的知識點。本期中需要注意的有“代表”和“委員 ”：

全國人民代表大會的成員稱為“代表”(deputy to NPC, dài biǎo)，

而中國人民政治協(xié)商會議的成員稱為“委員”(CPPCC members, wěi yuán)。

人大會議是“X屆全國人大X次會議”(the Xth session of Xth NPC)，

政協(xié)會議是“全國政協(xié)X屆X次會議”(the Xth session of Xth CPPCC National Committee)。

今年就是“第十三屆全國人大二次會議”(the second session of the 13th NPC)和“全國政協(xié)十三屆二次會議”(the second session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee)。
