Jelly Roll has a staggering amount of tattoos — but that doesn’t mean he likes them.
Jelly Roll

In a video interview with GQ, the “Need a Favor” singer revealed that he de dislikes almost all of his ink. “I regret 98% of these tattoos. 97% — almost all of them,” Jelly Roll said. “Like, core philosophies that I rooted my life in when I was 17 and now I’m 40, I’m like ‘What the f--- was I thinking?’”

The video was intended to be a tour of the singer’s most notable tattoos, which proved to be an overwhelming task. “I hate them all,” he said. “I don’t know where to start.”

Mr. Roll identified one design that gives him special pause. “Maybe the baby smoking the blunt was a little excessive?” he said. “You know what I’m saying? Maybe that was a little bit much.”

The singer said that nowadays, he only gets tattoos to commemorate tours and to cover up his most regrettable choices. “The ones that were really bad have already been covered up,” he explained. For example, Roll’s neck features the Nashville skyline to cover up the phrase “Surviving the struggle” — which was missing a “T” due to a typo, so it read “Surviving the sruggle.”

There are a select few tattoos that still hold personal meaning for the singer — particularly the large cross on his face. “It was symbolic of a change in me,” he said. “It was symbolic of kind of a new beginning, understanding that I need to bear my own cross.”

Another standout is the large text “Music Man” that’s sprawled across his forehead — a reference to one of his wife’s tattoos, which is itself a reference to the song “Tiny Dancer.”  “My wife has ‘Married a music man’ tattooed on her leg from the Elton John lyric,” he explained. “I realized that almost all of my tattoos represent who I was, none of them represent who I am. And quite a few years ago, I looked at my wife, and I said, ‘I don’t want to be bound to these old tattoos anymore. I want them to be reflective of who I am.’ and I was like ‘I think I’m gonna put Music Man on my forehead.’”

Jelly Roll still encourages people to get tattoos, and advises everyone to save up for the best artists they can find. “I tell people I regret my tattoos, but I would not not get tattoos,” he said. “If I could do it all over again, I’d’ve went from the tip of my finger to the back of my head — but I’d have got with the best artist on Earth and took my time.”
