Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the Shangri-Las, has died, the BBC reports. She was 75.

Miriam Linna, the founder of the pioneering girl group's record label, Norton Records, confirmed her death to the outlet, saying in a statement, "Mary was an icon, a hero, a heroine, to both young men and women of my generation and of all generations."

Born and raised in the New York City borough of Queens, Weiss formed a singing group — which later became the Shangri-Las — with her sister Elizabeth, a.k.a. "Betty," and twins Mary Ann and Marguerite “Marge” Ganser while they were students at Andrew Jackson High School in 1963.

Multiple artists have covered the track since its release, including Twisted Sister, and it was later featured in Martin Scorsese’s classic film Goodfellas.

Over the course of their career, the Shangri-Las released just two albums — Leader of the Pack and The Shangri-Las '65! — before disbanding in 1968 amid legal troubles. At the height of their fame, the group performed with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and James Brown.

Her debut album, Dangerous Games, was released in 2007.
