中國(guó)人最易誤解的話第20期:黃金般寶貴的是乖

　　The child is as good as gold.

　　(誤譯)這個(gè)孩子像黃金那樣寶貴。

　　(正譯)這個(gè)孩子很乖。

　　as good as gold 是習(xí)語(yǔ)，雖然有很多as... as... 形式的詞組可以直譯，例如as... as ever (always) 可直譯為“與往常一樣......”，但 as good as gold 則有特殊的意義(“很乖”)，不能按字面直譯。

　　“乖”的內(nèi)涵和引申：

　　1. clever adj. 聰明的;機(jī)靈的;熟練的

　　Even the media occasionally try to trick the public with a clever April Fool story.

　　大眾媒體偶爾也會(huì)以巧妙的愚人節(jié)故事來(lái)愚弄公眾。

　　If such a clever person becomes arrogant or sarcastic, however, their words can hurt you.

　　如果這樣聰明的人變得傲慢和自大，他們就可能會(huì)傷害到你。

　　2. alert vt. 使警覺(jué)，使意識(shí)到;警告

　　adj. 警惕的，警覺(jué)的;留心的

　　n. 警報(bào);警戒，警惕

　　My horse was not above medium size, but he was alert.

　　我所騎的馬，大小不過(guò)中等，但是感覺(jué)靈敏。

　　Be alert to students expressing overwhelming feelings in discussions.

　　3. good adj. 好的;優(yōu)良的;愉快的;虔誠(chéng)的

　　n. 好處;善行;慷慨的行為

　　adv. 好

　　A good lather is half the shave.

　　好的泡沫是修面成功的一半。

　　The news is too good to be true.

　　那消息太好了，很難相信是真的。

　　4. perverse 乖張的，倔強(qiáng)的違反常情的

　　There could be perverse results, too.

　　這樣做確實(shí)也可能產(chǎn)生荒唐的結(jié)果。

　　America's health-care system is a nightmare of perverse incentives.

　　美國(guó)的醫(yī)療保健系統(tǒng)具有反動(dòng)力。

　　5. shrewd adj. 精明的;狡猾的;機(jī)靈的

　　n. 精明(的人);機(jī)靈(的人)

　　Yet in many respects it was a shrewd move.

　　然而，在很多方面，荷蘭都有著良好的發(fā)展。

　　He was too shrewd to believe that it must exist.

　　他到是不至于愚蠢到相信那一定會(huì)存在。
