[04:37]Summon any one and make this request: [04:43]“Please look in the encyclopedia and make a brief memorandum for me concerning the life of Correggio.” [04:54]Will the clerk quietly say, “Yes, sir,” and go do the task? [05:02]On your life, he will not. [05:06]He will look at you out of a fishy eye and ask one or more of the following questions: [05:15]Who was he? [05:18]Which encyclopedia? [05:21]Where is the encyclopedia? [05:24]Was I hired for that? [05:28]What’s the matter with George doing it? [05:32]Is he dead? [05:34]Is there any hurry? [05:36]Shan’t I bring you the book and let you look it up yourself? [05:42]What do you want to know for? [05:47]And I will lay you ten to one that after you have answered the questions, [05:54]and explained how to find the information, and why you want it, [06:01]the clerk will go off and get one of the other clerks to help him try to find Garcia— [06:11]and then come back and tell you there is no such man. [06:17]Of course I may lose the bet, but according to the Law of Average, I will not. [06:29]This incapacity for independent action, this moral stupidity, [06:37]this infirmity of the will, this unwillingness to cheerfully catch hold and lift— [06:47]these are the things that put pure Socialism so far into the future. [06:56]If men will not act for themselves, [07:00]what will they do when the benefit of their effort is for all? [07:07]My heart goes out to the man who does his work when the “boss” is away, as well as when he is at home. [07:19]And the man who, when given a letter for Garcia, quietly takes the missive, [07:28]without asking any idiotic questions, [07:33]and with no lurking intention of chucking it into the nearest sewer, [07:41]or of doing aught else but deliver it, [07:45]never gets “l(fā)aid off” nor has to go on a strike for higher wages. [07:54]Anything such a man asks shall be granted. [08:01]He is wanted in every city, town and village and in every office, shop, store and factory. [08:14]The world cries out for such: he is needed and needed badly— [08:23]the man who can “Carry a Message to Garcia”.
